Son and Daughter refuse to wear summer clothes

I hope I am in the right place. I am sorry if I am not. I was doing a search today and found this web site on this subject but it was from 2009. I will be as vrief as possible. I need advice on what I should do about my kids refusing to wear shorts or even go barefoot in the summer. My son is 12 and my Daughter is 16. I have taken prior advice and figured they would both out grow it but they have not. Now today I received a letter from my daughters School advising me that hse was given an incomplete for Phys. Ed. because she didn't dress for class. My son did Ok because I figure that his teacher allowed them to wear sweats. Well I think it is time I do something about this. I talked to my Daughter and she said the School is nuts and that she should be allowed to wear sweats in class.

So what should I do enforce a dress code or just let her fail next year also. We are going on Vacation over the $th of July holiday and I thought maybe I can start them off then and let it continue when we get home. This is such a long story but I will wait and see what I get back as what you think I should do.

I wouldn't care what they wore really. If they want to be hot so be it. In the specific case of dressing for gym I would make my kid period. It is a school rule and nonnegotiable. I would have consequences if they continued to defy the school dress code.

I completely agree!  Home is one thing, but school is non-negotiable.  Get her a bigger size shorts if she is shy.

What do you mean by bigger size shorts. She is just shy but they would need to fit. Do you mean longer ones?

Well if it is the dress code that she has to wear shorts in P.E. than that is not negotible with her.

And she needs to learn now, that we all have to do things in life that we might not want to do but it is the rule.

I don't like to pay taxes, but I know I have too and their is not one thing I can do to stop from paying them.

I would get her some longer gym shorts for PE class, maybe she would be more comfortable in them, unless she's just being rebelious. Outside of school and on vacation, I'd let the kids wear long pants, if thats what makes them happy.

I would go to the school and tell them she needs a religious exception to the "shorts" rule. I mean this is really a big deal to her so I'd support her in it. There is no real reason why she has to wear shorts - long, medium or short or otherwise. The school is just being dumb.

I didn't realize that schools still had a "dress" code for PE.  I also don't see the problem with her wearing sweats, but if it is a school rule, there isn't much you can do.  So I would probably first start with the school and see if they will allow her to wear sweats.  If they are adamant that she can't, I would try the longer shorts.  Would the school allow the capri shorts?  I have several of them that I wear to work out in.

The religious angle would be OK, if it was true. But if you are just lying to get your daughter out of doing something that she doesn't want to do, than that is just wrong. And it also will be showing her that lying is acceptable, if you want to get out of obeying rules.

The middle school and high school here not only has a dress code for gym but you have to purchase the gym outfit from the school. Here it is a revesable shirt and a pair of shorts. There are zero options other than size. Not real happy because the uniform runs almost $30.
