Frugal Road Trip Lunches

When you're on a family road trip, how do you save money on lunches and snacks along the way?

We bring all our food from home.  I will make lunches the night before.  The girls will pack a light breakfast that they can eat in the car.  And I have a bag of "snack foods" along with some fruit and carrots in the cooler.

We always bring our own food from home. Usually sandwiches and pretzels, granola bars and fruit. We also carry ice water with every trip.

I like to make pinwheels. Some sun dried tomato pesto on a tortilla wrap. On top of that "flat" veggies like leaf lettuce, onions, tomatoes, whatever. Then some lunch meat, whatever we are wanting at the time. Then you roll it up starting at one end, tucking tightly while you roll. Put in the freezer for about 10 minutes to firm up. then slice in half inch increments. Pop in a container and keep in the fridge until you are ready to leave. Love them!

We just got back from almost a week long vacation and I made pocket sandwiches to eat on the road our first night for supper. I then packed packaged peanuts, twizzlers (our one must to have), chips (lays staxs, cheetos), trail mix, beef jerky, chex mix. In the cooler I had gatorade, water (prepackaged single drink mixes I had with), pop (caffeine types and seirra mist) and snapple. I also packed extra of the drinks so we could refill the cooler as it got empty. I also had baby carrots and different types of beef sticks (cut up) in the cooler. We made sure to get a hotel that had a breakfast included and ate quite a bit in the mornings that way when we were out sight-seeing we just munched on what we brought with. For supper we ate light meals at restaurants that we don't have around where we live.

I usually make pbj or ham & cheese roll ups since those travel well. If we are going to be gone a few days I pack the ingrediants so we can make them fresh each day. I always pack waters and snacks like goldfish and ritz crackers. We typically eat breakfast where we stay, lunch with what we brought and dinner either out or at someones home. Gas is always my biggest expense.

We like Hampton Inns because they have a great breakfast buffet.  Not just cereal and donuts - they usually have eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, hash browns.

We just got back from our vacation.  We also made sure to stay at hotels that had breakfast included and that saved us quite a bit of money.  We also pack a case of bottles waters and some other drinks plus I keep a large bag of non-meltable snacks.  Things like apples, plums, carrots, celery,  crackers and vanilla wafers are things we usually keep in the car. I try and pick fruit that doesn't get bruised easily and doesn't have too strong a smell.  We learned not to pack anything chocolate because it is messy and it melts and it makes you thirsty.  I don't pack our lunch because our road trips are usually heading south where it is too hot to sit outside to eat.  There is no way I am eating a picnic when it is 105 degrees outside.  LOL!

Oh and we have learned to pack ginger snaps for my dd who gets car sick.  They are a  nice snack for all of us and they help her when she doesn't feel so good.

One of the hotels that we stayed at for two nights was Ramada Inn and their breakfast was a buffet as well with make your own waffles, scrambled eggs, diced potatoes, sausage links, french toast sticks (the 1st morning), biscuits & gravy (the 2nd morning), different kinds of yogurt, cocktail sauce, cottage cheese, salsa (for the eggs), apples, toast, muffins, plain donuts, 2 kinds of cereal and then juice and coffee. It was soooo good!
