when you are stressing about money and you actually sit down and stop to figure up your numbers, are you more or less stressed?

Woke up early, early morning and got stressing about money. Back at the start of May, things looked great. We were booked for the entire year and had a good solid savings. Then we were hit with some major bills and a huge amount of stress. During this month, we lost two kids and I have a third kid, parents can not pay for awhile, though I still have the kid. My other two full time clients, one is completing his year in August and may or may not be leaving and the other ... let's just say this young man is more "clinical" then we normally deal with and I don't know if we are willig to keep him. We do have two possible new kids for mid August but you never know until they are in the door what you have.

So needless to say, I started stresssing and couldn't sleep. So I got up finally and did the math. Believe it or not, I walked away feeling better, but realizing, that savings needs to be bumped back up.

Does anyone else ever do this?

Less. For some reason getting it all on paper and seeing it helps...even if it's not good news. We can come up with a plan and that alone makes me feel better.

Depends on how serious my financial situation is.  There have been times when I've felt better and times when I felt worse.  This month is definitely a "worse."

Currently, when I put it down on paper I get more stressed.  We have depleted our savings that we were using for college and now the loans are starting to build up.  So when I consolidated all the loans to see what was outstanding, it was not pleasant (and we have another 2 years of borrowing for college for two of them).  I know in the long run they will be paid off because we have a plan (with the advice of a fiinancial planner), but right now, in the middle of it, I'm not feeling so good.  I'm back to where I was when the girls were little and I always told them, "no, we can't afford it" even when they asked for burger king!

When I fear there isn't enough money to go around, I tend to procrastinate about paying bills - not good. What I need to do is just buckle down and pay them and get it over with. I'd rather deal with the devil I know than have all those bills hanging over my head.

In other words, instead of just writing it all down (which I do anyway when dealing with the budget and bill paying), I actually have to DO something. I need more than a plan. I need action.

This is so me. Lol.

I feel better after figuring it out.  Part of that is because what keeps me up at night is trying to remember it all.  Getting up and writing it down, clears my mind and helps me get back to sleep.

I feel less stressed after it's all figured out.  Even if it means things will indeed be tight, I get much comfort out of knowing where we stand.

Me as well. Usually when I sit and figure it out I can come up with a somewhat more reasonable plan of attack than just winging it.
