For fiscal year 2011 the government overpaid an estimated 14 billion dollars into unemployment. According to the article unemployment was the second largest source of improper funds of any federal program. Want to know what the first was? school lunch programs

What the hell is wrong with people.

I'm surprised because I was reading the other day that Medicaid has an extremely high percentage of user fraud - far more than private insurance programs.

Hubby heard from a former co-worker last night (via e-mail). The guy lives in CA and was laid off 6 weeks ago. He's still waiting for his unemployment application to get approved.

Ahhh....yes I see they mention IN. There was something on our news a few wks ago about some sort of fraud, although I think instead of unemployment it was welfare. One guy who worked there said that there was MASSIVE fraud including some people listing they were head of household for tons of people who were "nephews and nieces", etc (I'm talking like 20 people or something) and they KNEW it was inaccurate, but it was "easier" to just pay it than to try to investigate it and try to stop it. So they'd just keep paying people they KNEW were committing fraud. He kept complaining to people who would do nothing about it and tell him it was "just the way it was", but it finally hit the news. I just think there is so much fraud in so many social welfare programs and it makes me sick, but don't know anything to do about it. It would be interesting to see how much waste is in all the programs combined. Scary I'm sure.
