That is how it is here too. Crazy. I go through DDs clothes and we play dressup. LOL After I see what fits and what doesnt we go from there. I generally set a $150 budget on clothes and supplies. Last year DD picked out one shirt and spent the rest on shoes. Whatever. I have already put the necessities on layaway. Socks, underwear, bras, and white t-shirts(for dh). The basics. We always take care of the entire family in that area at back to school time. Might as well when they are on sale. Mens boxers are freakin expensive!

I used to buy at the beginning of the school year but I have gone to buying as they need. They both play a fall sport so they need items for that as well as school, so I have them go through their closets to see what they have and what they need. Last year they mostly wore school t-shirts (they sell fan shirts for every sport and they both got several plus from their sports) So I am not planning on buying them tons much to begin school except for the basics.

People here do this as well so I am in the same universe as you.

There are always going to people who spend a lot.  I know of parents who drop their kids off at the mall with $2k cash to get new school clothes.

I think it's a keeping up with the Jones', entitled mindset. But hey, if that's how they choose to spend their money they can knock their socks off. So long as they stay out of my wallet I'm fine lol

I usually go thru all their clothes with them before we step foot in a store.   Then i make a list of what we need & start shopping.  Usually it's not much.  We re-use bookbags & lunchboxes yearly (all LL Bean).  All we have to buy for school supplies is 2 boxes of tissues & 1 bottle of hand sanitzier.  I try & hit the thrift stores also to see if we can find anything there so we can save on the budget.

I'm sure people do here, too, but I'm a Mommysaver!  I know I always got new school clothes every year.  Grandma would take me shopping.

This is our first year. I *might* buy M a new outfit for back-to-school, but she has plenty of clothes and new clothing is sometimes more of a punishment than a treat for her.

I find that usually the first week most kids wear new outfits & then by the 2nd week of school the novelty has worn off, so i usually just buy them a few things each & then they wear what they have.   I don't have lots of money to spend giving them each a new wardrobe.

DD will get a couple of things to start the year off with - but like most of you, she will still be in shorts - we will start to get fall clothes as they go on sale :)

My DD is of the age where she is "too cool" to wear a new outfit the first day. Her strategy is that she needs to look like she doesn't care - ha ha.

My kids are still little and in preschool so normally no. I do buy DH a new pair of khakis, one dress shirt, some socks and boxers before each school year. He is a teacher and I mainly just replace things that are looking too worn/stained.
