Do you use power strips?

Do you find that plugging appliances, entertainment devices, etc into power strips saves you money? Have you tried tracking 'phantom' energy usage to reduce your electric bill?

We use power strips for two reasons: Surge protection (obviously we look for surge protection in the power strip rating) and to expand the number of outlets in a specific area.

I don't even think about phantom electricity usage. I don't think I've shut off a power strip in the last 5 years. I have unplugged a power strip during a severe thunder storm, though.

Same here. I only unplug them when I'm worried about a storm.

We use power strips for more outlets & for surge protection. My DH says they will not help you save energy at all - they are not designed for that. As far as "phantom" energy use - I have better things to do w/ my time than to try to track something like that.

LOL.  I would really like to see the money saved on unplugging everything.  Its not worth the time.

That's what I'm curious about. $10/year? To heck with it. $100/year? Hmm   I've seen standard numbers form 5% to 20%, that seems way too generalized. How do they know how much crap I do or don't have? lol
