Braces for my oldest.

Probably my DD"s cello lessons when she was in HS. It wasn't a large one time purchase, but it was $65/ wk so it really added up!!!

Also each of my kids got a BIG trip when they were in HS that cost a bunch. My DD went to Russia with her HS orchestra, and my DS went to Europe (Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and a short stop in London) with his HS AP US History teacher on a group trip.

The most expensive THING (not an experience) was probably my DD's cello. It was $3000-$4000 range (I don't remember exactly).

Oh yeah.....forgot about braces!! Both of my kids had those, and my DS had to have TWO rounds so it was full price both times for him, and then once for DD.

Even orthodontia was a cumulative expense. As for other cumulative expenses, I'd add: utilities, clothes, lessons, and repairs / replacement of all the stuff they've damaged over the years.

When the kids get to be teens, we buy them furniture that they can take with them when they move out. While I wouldn't say that is a big expense (a few hundred bucks for a couch - which is cheap for a couch), it does add up.

I'm assuming car insurance doesn't count.  So I would say, dance lessons and braces.

Based on my and hubby's jacked up teeth and years in orthodontia I'm going to go out on a limb and say it will be braces

Maggie's Disneyland pass, or maybe air tickets when we were travelling around Asia.  I haven't spent much on baby boy - we stopped travelling the day before he turned 2 - but I just signed both of them up for swimming lessons, so probably that.

Tuition for preschool and Kindergarten.

Next runner up would be skiing passes and equipment.

Swim team is expensive but not as much as skiing.

Tuition for private school.
