Has anyone painted their dining room furniture?

Thread Starter

We've had our dining room set that we purchased for $100 at an auction for 11 years.  It is scratched up but it could be sanded and painted.  dh doesn't think there is anything wrong with it.  It looks very outdated to me.  I also have a hutch type thing I'm using for a computer desk that I want to paint to match the table and chairs, since its in the dining room.

The tablecloth and place mats look tacky.  I don't know what I was thinking... anyway.. this is my before photo.

Do you have the 6th chair? I think maybe having it shoved against the wall like that makes it look weird. Do you have room to move it out?

I've never painted furniture, but I love the look of wood. When I've had beat up wood, I've stripped it and refinished it with a wood stain. Is the photo in the bottom black? That does look nice.

I vote for turning the table lengthwise and squeezing that last chair in there if you have it. Is it real wood? If so you'll be fine painting it with any decent quality latex paint. Don't skimp on the prep and it makes it a super easy update. Big impact for a little bit of time and very little money. If it's laminate you need to be much more precise and thorough, but again you shouldn't have too much of a problem, prep is the key. I love that nice deep color of the proposed, I can't tell if it's black or just very dark. Either way, it looks very elegant and inviting. Good luck!

I have painted furniture over the years. If I took the time and use quality paint it always turned out fine.

I have even spray painted wicker furniture and it look really good.

OMG, we used to own those chairs. I hated them.

Personally, I don't like painted furniture. I see it in magazines and like the look but when it comes to buying something, I can't bring myself to do it.

With your table, I'd eliminate one chair (put it in a corner) and buy a complimentary bench for that side of the table. Also consider cutting off the balls at the top of those chairs.

Strip the table top and stain it - a dark cherry stain. Paint the rest of the table (the legs and the wood where the table top rests) black. Strip the chair seats and stain those dark cherry red, too. Paint the rest of them black. Use a flat black paint then put a semi-gloss or low-gloss clear varnish over the top.

If you want to make the set look "rustic" after painting and before the clear top coating, lightly sand the black paint in the areas where there would most like be wear.

This sounds great!!  But that's too much work for me.  I like the idea about cutting off the balls smile.gif and sanding but then I'd just paint them black.  I'd also move the table from the wall, put the 4th chair there and put the 5th in the corner like suggested.

I agree with this.  I DO like painted furniture, though.  :)

Honestly, I would just buy $1 can of black spray paint from Walmart and spray the chairs, with no prep work.  I have done tons of stuff that way and it holds up great and if eventually there is a problem, you just spray it again and it's back to perfect.  If I get a chance I'll post a picture of my kitchen table.  I have black chairs.  The table top would be harder though, maybe just keep it covered or buy a new inexpensive one from IKEA?  The only hesitation I would have is that those chairs are pretty country looking so they won't look as good black as a more contemporary set.  However, they would probably look better!  If I have something I don't like, I always try to paint it and figure it's worth a shot and I'll replace it if it doesn't work.

I do like the bench idea but if the table isn't square then I don't think it will work. If you can cut off the balls (LoL sorry I had to giggle) I think that would bring the style up a decade or two!

We have old furniture that is an off white and distressed so it is more like a beachy look but I would have gone with black distressed furniture if we did a different theme.

Good luck & please share the after pics with us!

My last kitchen table had two benches (one each side) and chairs on the ends. The benches work better, IMHO, if the table is oval - more room to slide in and out. It is just more comfortable than if the table is a perfect rectangle.

I agree with not prepping for the black paint. Other than making sure there wasn't any greasy or very dirty spots, I'd paint right over the finish that is already there.
