a backpack?

I'm going to make Maggie a messenger bag for school, because we think it will be easier than a backpack. Also we didn't find anything good.  I don't want to use denim. Should I use twill, or canvas? Or is there something better? Or just use heavy interfacing?

I  would use Duck Cloth or if she is not carrying a lot of books, that quilted fabric that already has backing on it.

My personal favorite is home decor fabric or outdoor patio fabrics. You can then use waterproof spray on it (I can't for the life of me remember what the actual name is) and it holds up really well.

When we started to paint DD's room, I bought a fabric - heavy duty canvas - drop cloths at WalMart. OMG! I love the fabric! It isn't they typical bland beige. It is a little darker, more heathered looking. And there were no seams! I almost didn't want to use them as drop cloths.

I am thinking about using fuschia canvas/duck cloth and doing a freezer paper/fabric paint t-rex skull stencil I found online.  That way it will be girly, but cool. She wanted dinosaurs, but I thought all the cute fabric was kind of baby looking.

Sounds like a great idea!

I was also going to suggest canvas but I see you already found some!

I ended up buying some black duckcloth at Jo-Ann, and some pink hello kitty fabric.  I'm going to use this kids' messenger bag tutorial, but I'm going to make it a little bigger.  I also got super heavy stabilizer, so I hope I bought enough fabric for a lining.
