There's a little bit of a learning curve to rolling. From your pic, I would say use a little less rice. When you start rolling, you'll see that you have more rice than you thought. Also, as I roll, I squeeze the mat to make sure the roll is good and tight.

Well as I said...I've never done them, but looking at the picture I'd guess you put in too much rice. Usually the layer of rice in the ones I've had is much thinner than yours.

less rice and roll it as tight as you can you can even re roll it at the start to get it tighter. Also depending on your rolling mat you are using if it is what they are sitting on in the picture I cut the wide end part off my mat,

Thanks for the feedback!  I will definitely be trying it again and use less rice next time.  I think I need to make the crab/avocado/cucumber slices a bit larger so they look prettier too.

Aliadam - if your dd likes sushi, you should try making it with her!  It's not hard.

Also, I put the rice layer on the outside. That way, the stickiness of the rice keeps the end of the roll from coming loose.

I thought about that when I read this thread. She's coming back from her "vacation" this week and we need a bit of bonding. This summer has been a bit stressful on our relationship. Did you buy a kit? Or where did you get the stuff to roll it?

When I make it, I buy the nori at World Market in their grocery section. I don't know if there's one in your area, but if not, you can probably find the mat and nori at any Asian market.

Winn Dixie has the short grain rice.

I had the mat already (got it as a gift), but I found all the ingredients at our local grocery store.  As long as your grocery store has ethnic foods, you should be able to get what you need there.  You probably wouldn't need to buy a special mat for rolling either.  The mats and paddles are really cheap on Amazon.

Question - does anyone know how long nori will last?  How perishable is it?

As long as it's kept dry, it will last months. If you don't use the whole package, put it in an airtight container and stick it in the pantry. If it gets damp, throw it out - it will mold.

I may need to invest in this sushi kit for my house......

We went to Bonefish Grill last night and they have something called a Lollipop Roll, they take a cucumber, hollow it out, fill it with I forgot what and use it instead of rice and seaweed! That has me interested to make it!
