So why are these kinds of books so popular? Is this really how the majority of American women think?

I think it's somewhat "housewife voyeurism". I've not read them. I admit I'm mildly interested since EVERYONE is talking about them, but I just can't get into S&M type stuff, and I've heard he beats the crap out of her. Not my style.

Another phrase that was highly annoying was when Christian would say, "Laters, Baby."

Really?!  Who talks that way?

I got sick and tired of her biting her lip also

I hated it.  I got it from the library and got half through and just couldn't read it any more.   I thought it was written way worse than Twilight, which I also thought was very poorly written, but realized it was YA.  Shades didn't even have that excuse IMO.

This is another reason I just could not get into it.  I KNOW some people get into S&M but frankly when it went from mildly turning me on (some scenes) to definitely turning me OFF and sickening me, I had to just abandon it.  He does beat the crap out of her and this just goes way beyond anything that I would even consider pleasurable.  Actually I've been doing a bit of looking into why S&M is even remotely interesting to some people and it's about power - the total lack of it or the total power and that how it can even be 'healthy'.  .  OK, but the main character admits that he's ***ked up so where does that put the S&M community?  Anyway, it reminded me too much of my friend's SIL that was abused by her husband sexually and otherwise.  So out it went.  Thank God I didn't pay to read it.
