Kids aka young adults do these sorts of things. I have had many a teen beg me to take them to the ER because their throat was sore or their arm hurt. I had one kid, he was fat but kept telling everyone how athletic he was at football, snowboarding, lacrosse and wrestling. Do you know he ended up making three ER trips because of his "injuries"? The last time, he "blew his knee out" wrestling, though mind you, he was fine walking until he saw my car pull up, and I told him, "OK, I will take you to the ER or you will wait till tomorrow to go see the doctor and tonight we will go out to eat". Guess what he chose? We ate out. Hahaha

I guess it would depend on how bad it looked and how much it was bothering him. I do take my kids in for pretty much everything and don't hesitate to take them to the ER if that is all that is available. And yes, I pay my own bills. I just don't take any chances with my kiddos. Luckily they are pretty healthy.

Coming from somebody that only went to the doctor if I needed stitches or was sick longer that 2 days, my answer would be NO. I would Google the mess out of it and try to figure out on my own what the problem was. It wouldn't matter if it was my own insurance or state assistance!

My kids only go to the ER if it's absolutely unavoidable. Regular doctor's can be paged after hours is needed. The ER is for danger to life or limb injuries first and foremost. I have had to take my oldest DS to the ER awhile back though b/c urgent care centers will NOT do facial sutures b/c of the possibility of needing a consult with a plastic surgeon.

The only time I took my youngest to the er is when she began to scream in pain and her pee was bright red. She ended up having a severe bladder infection. I have taken my kids to the local urgent care if they are really sick after hours.

DS's one and only ER visit was when he stuck a tinfoil candy wrapper up his nose, without us knowing, and it suddenly started bleeding. With a brother that died due to leukemia, trust me, that one got medical attention right then and there.

The only time I have taken any of my kids to the ER was when I though middle dd sprained her ankle on a weekend.  She refused to put any pressure on it.  And she cried the whole way there, and the whole time we were there because she didfn't want to be there.

Not for a rash.

I would just buy calamine lotion and give them a bendadryl. Then go to the dr or a walk in clinic, if the dr. couldn't see us.

The ER is for acute [internal] pain, breaks and lacerations, or for kids through-the-roof fevers that won't break. Not because your kid has a rash and you want some free drugs rolleyes.gif

What is it with little boys and shoving things in their nose? It's like their own little personal pocket.
