do you try something new or just stick to the same thing that you normally can get in your area where you live?

We usually vacation near beaches, so we usually eat a lot of the regional fresh fish.

We never eat at chains or places we can eat at home on vacation.

Trying local restaurants and the local cuisine is one of my favorite parts of vacation.  I would rather support a small business anyway.  I try to do that at home for the most part too.

My thoughts exactly!  Two years ago we drove from MN to South Carolina.  We vowed to avoid any chain restaurants.  We hit a few of the places seen on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. We love the small mom and pop establishments.

My whole family was up two weeks ago and vowed not to eat at a chain (we were at J's rehearsal dinner).  So they picked a "pub" thinking it was just a local bar.  I hated to tell them that it was a chain.  My sister was so disappointed.

I tend to eat what is the specialty in the area.  That is why you go on vacation--to experience it all.  We'll ask the waiter what their specialty is and what the area is known for before ordering.

I will eat at a chain or franchise if it is one we don't have in our area. Basically, as long as it isn't a fast food place or Waffle House, it is a possibility. And there are some locations where it is very nice to get something familiar while travelling. For instance, when we were in France, we stayed at (what is known at) and American hotel where they served the standard American breakfast. The stand-out of that breakfast was plenty of good coffee. If you've ever been to France, you'd quickly realize that serving sizes, especially of beverages are very, very small. I need a lot more coffee than that. Having something familiar made a huge difference in the enjoyment of the trip.

If you all came here to visit, you'd be hard pressed to find a place to eat that isn't a chain restaurant.

I love that show!

I'm all about supporting the mom and pop places.
