I shouldn't live in town.

When we first bought our house, it was considered county but still ... I just shouldn't have neighbors and in that they annexed us into the city.

First it has been WWIII with the woman behind us. She doesn't like our dogs. Teenage boys. Or our roosters. We built a fence behind us. I keep the roosters locked up until late in the morning. And I don't let the boys play loud music and they are not allowed to play basketball past 10 pm, 9 pm when the days get shorter.

The one redeeming thing about our house and the woman behind us was there was this tiny, tiny lot between us. Too small for a house and it has been on market forever. The man that owns it, he lives in Arizona, and wanted like $50,000 for it. DH and I offered him $10,000 awhile back and he passed. The only good thing about this property was the line of trees that rsn along our fence line. It enclosed our back property and helped buffer the chickens and the rooster.

Guess what this nameless man from Arizona is doing ... Having all of the fricken trees cut down. He thinks it will raise the property value of it.

I hate neighbors. Or I guess just the ones that live behind us.

Plant trees on your side of the property line? I am the opposite of you, I like my neighbors close. Makes me feel better.

We have but it will take years to replace what they cut down.

If it's too small for a house I wonder what he thinks will inspire people to buy it? Especially for 50k or more. His best bet would have been to sell to you or the lady behind who is adjacent to it.

I cannot tell a lie. I HATE my neighbors that leave their barking dogs outside. Drives me crazy. We couldn't have roosters here but if someone did I'd hate that too. So if I lived behind you I'd probably dislike your animals too. Sorry!! To be honest I'm surprised you can keep roosters in city limits.

I had the chickens and roosters before we were city, they are grandfathered in ... Though in my city, chickens and roosters are allowed, there just is a limit of 20 or 30, I have 15, well below the number.

As for the dogs, they bark but no more or less than anyone else's. These neighbors tend to blame us for the neighbor's dog next to us. I have had the police come to the house to complain of barking dogs and my two have been on the floor in the house. Of course, our family was watching a movie one night when they called in a noise complaint of Mexican music playing loudly ... which was the people down and over ... But they always blame us. They did it to the family before us too.

Where I should have looked to live well outside of town, they should have looked for an area with an extremely strong home owner's association.

I've never understood people who live on land - or live out of the usual suburban subdivision - but don't do anything with it and don't expect any of their neighbors will either. The town where we lived in ID was famous for this. The town was originally very agricultural. Many of the original homeowners still farmed or had animals on their land. But a neighbor would sell (the land was their last "crop") and a subdivision with 4 to 6 houses per acre would pop up. Suddenly the new neighbors were complaining about those farmers who were running their tractors late at night (because farmers now can't survive without a day job), the flies, the smell, the noise, the weeds, the field burning, and all sorts of other stuff. It is like people who buy next to an airport because the housing is cheap then try to restrict the air traffic because the planes taking off at 6am are too loud.

But in all fairness to the neighbor behind you, I probably would have sold the trees, too. Around here that is exactly what people do. Timber is a crop. We've got 1.5 acres or tress on one side and 3.5 acres on the other. We have no plans to sell the trees anytime soon but we could. As a matter of fact, it is better to sell them when they are ready than to let them go to disease. So, just like people who complain about chickens in rural areas, unless I own the trees, I can't really complain when they get cut down.

And like you, I hope our county land doesn't get incorporated anytime soon. I think if a town is going to incorporate an area they better provide city services. For us, for instance, 911 services are 20 minutes away. Even if we got incorporated, that wouldn't change.

I was just going to ask how they thought cutting down trees would raise the property value.  Do you think the trees brought in more money than your offer of $10K?  I can't imagine they did.  Just is so strange.

Look into planting Leyland Cypress'.  They are (relatively) inexpensive (I know, no trees are inexpensive), and they grow CRAZY fast.  Just an idea.  I have no idea if they will grow in your area, though.  If they will, they give GREAT privacy.

It was a line of trees and in no way that they would bring in any cash value. I think the he is paying to clear the trees is keeping the wood for himself for this winter. They weren't large trees, they just kind of enclosed our backyard and acted as a buffer between us and the neighbor lady.

Our neighborhood was once agricultural, but it was sold apart, we are not the only people with chickens, i know of at least five others, the people across the way have horses, and someone back behind us has lamas. we were annexed into the city back around Christmas time without a lot of fan fair. Our neighborhood is coming together and suing the city but it takes time.

I have no recourse on the trees, of course, it just sucks that some guy in two other states over can cut down "my" trees. frown.gif
