No seatbelt?!

Thread Starter

How do you feel about this?  I have a friend that when she drives, will not use a seat belt.  I am horrified, I have never heard of such a thing.   Her child does, but I'm wondering if she only does this when she has other kids in the car (not hers).

We were all going somewhere yesterday, she drove, no seatbelt.  Ds didn't notice thankfully but honestly I can't see anything so careless.  I've already decided if I'm driving us all around either she uses a seatbelt or she doesn't get  a ride.  I just can't imagine.

What do you think?

DH never wears his.

I always do because it was just ingrained in me as a kid and is habit. I feel like I'm sliding all over the place if I don't have it on.

To each their own. I insist on kids wearing their seatbelts 100% of the time. I won't even turn the car on until they are all buckled, but an adult can make their own decision. Whether I agree with it or not isn't important.

Seat belts are a MUST in my car- I will not put it in drive until everyone is buckled up. If you choose to ride in your own car without a seat belt that's your choice, but my car- my rules.

When I was 17 I got pulled over for speeding. The cop was nice and said, I'll just write you out a ticket for no seat belt, it's less. I started crying and said, "no write me the speeding ticket. I always wear my seat belt, my Dad is a Sergeant and if he thought I wasn't wearing a seat belt, he'll kill me!". He chuckled and said I'm going to let you off with a written warning.

I always wear my seat belt and my kids are always buckled into their car seats, they are still young though.  My DH always wears his seat belt too.  My dad used to not wear his seat belt, he said it hit his neck in the wrong place and it bothered him.  Then he was in a car accident and they added the seat belt law, he now wears his seat belt all the time, he just got used to wearing it.

that's our rule too - the car does not go in drive until everyone is in a seat belt.  Most of the time nobody even needs a reminder anymore.

I confess, the more rural we live, the less quickly I put on my seat belt. It gets on by the time I hit the main road, it just takes me time. With modern airbags, sometimes seat belts don't make as much sense as they once did (yes, seat belts are still necessary - but that's how the thinking goes). Anyway, we all wear seat belts but I am also used to the fact that there are lots of people who still refuse. They don't drive my child around, though. I agree - my car, my rules.

I worked at the hospital with neurosurgical patients before there were mandatory seat belt laws. I remember one of the neurosurgeons saying he thought that they (neurosurgeons) were the only people who probably wore them. They'd seen too many head injuries and spinal cord injuries to not. He told me he had told his small children that the car WOULDN'T start if the seat belts weren't plugged in.

My kids and I always wear our seatbelts. DH doesn't for some reason.....he used to so I'm not sure how he got out of the habit. If one of my kids are in the care they'll nag at him until he puts it on though. I will too.

I always wear my seatbelt, its just a habit(good habit!) My DS wears his too, without any argument, and will remind his friends if they are in the car with us and forget. My DH wears his while he is working, he drives a snowplow truck in winter and delivers pool water in the summer, but in our personal vehicles, he rarely puts it on, it drives me nuts! But he is an adult and its his stupid choice, we've argued about it, but I cannot change his mind. nonono2.gif

I admit sometimes I forget to put mine on, I do not like using it when I pull out of spaces etc since I turn my body to check for kids, cars etc behind me and It is

to hard on my neck if the seat belt is on but then I usually pull to a spot I can put it on before I drive off but I do forget and am on the road and When I realise I will putit on at the stoplight or stop sign since I do not want to be playing wiht it and driving at the same time.

seat belts are a must to me tho

I am very uncomfortable when not wearing a seatbelt.  My kids are, too. If I forget to do the bottom of M's harness, she will yell "don't forget!" when I turn the car on.

I haven't had this problem since driving friends around in high school, but "my car my rules" here as well.  I did have friends I had to MAKE wear their seatbelts. In CA, the driver gets the ticket if the unbelted passenger is under 16.
