How much is your sales tax where you live? - Page 2

10%, but our state's property tax is lower.

If I remember correctly Idaho was 6% and they taxed EVERYTHING including food and services like going to the doctor. I think prescription medications might be exempt but I wouldn't be surprised if they taxes that, too. They even taxed newspaper sales which some states declared illegal because that would be a tax on "speech".

Here in MS, the tax is 7% on most stuff, except grocery food.

They actually tried to add a sales tax to food here a few years back. It got passed and then repealed.  It wasn't on all food it was on candy, chips and soda and other snacks. The argument was that it hurt the local small businesses that produced snacks.

Anyway the main funding for getting rid of that added tax came from coke and pepsi if ever there was a reason for them not to compete one something.

I thought it was a great tax no one needs a soda to survive no one needs a bag of chips. People will debate the need for a constant stream of chocolate.

I don't think that our grocery staples should be taxed but I do say there needs to be some change. For example we don't tax people who shop here and live in Oregon or Canada. Yet if you live in Wa and work in Or you still pay Oregon state income tax. It would fill some budget gaps without raising it again. 9.4 is too high in my book.

Our county tax for non-food item ranges from 8.25% to 9.5% depending on the city or township.  Food is 2.25.  I think tax on food from a restaurant is still 10.25%.  Our taxes used to be higher, but they were lowered at the beginning of this year.
