Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker? - Page 2

I've never picked up a hitchhiker, but last year I did something that, if my dd had done this, I would have been furious with her -- I accepted a ride from a stranger. redface.gif

After the tornadoes roared through Alabama last April and knocked out the power to the entire northern part of the state, I heard that Publix was open with generator power, so I walked what would have been a 4 mile trip there to get some emergency supplies (I had 1/2 tank of gas in my car and dh had 3/4 of a tank, but there was no power, no one could pump gas, so dh and I decided to only drive in a serious emergency).  On the way back home with my heavy bag, a guy stopped and offered me a ride.  I hesitated, but I decided to chance it.  He turned out to be a very nice guy.  People were stepping up and doing out-of-the-ordinary things in an out-of-the-ordinary situation, so I appreciated the ride.  Under normal circumstances, I would never accept a ride from a stranger.

Yeah, you have to remember I went to college in the 70's, before most of you were even born LOL. Things were MUCH different then. Of course realistically it was dangerous even then, but people were more "peace and love" and expected the best out of people. Now, as I said, I can't imagine anyone doing it or picking someone up. My kids would never do it either. They'd be scaredy cats and call daddy LOL.

I do feel that when something like that strikes, it can bring out the best in people.  So many people wanted to help but just didn't know how.  Here's one way that man felt he was helping.   But I agree about "under normal circumstances"...

Picked up 2 girls who were trying to walk up one of the mountains in the northwest - no kids then, just dh and I.  These were like college kids and we figured that we can over power them and if need be.

On a side note, we had an Audi then and the girls were like, oooh you have a  nice car and it goes up a mountain like a charm.  :)

DH use to pick up this guy he knew. He was pretty weird but harmless, our dog loved him. I picked him up a couple of times when it was just me but stopped after DD was born.

I hitchhiked one time in high school. Well twice actually because our trip required two different rides. We went on possibly the stupidest rafting trip of all time and ended up going over a waterfall and hiking out of the woods barefoot (it was a boating trip, who needs shoes) and hitchhiking. we were picked up pretty quickly. Three of us. The first woman kept telling us creatures that would eat us were we had been hiking and the second ride, he had just gotten out of jail and gave us a single beer. Said we looked like we probably needed it. We probably did. My friend and I counted, we had, combined about 142 bruises, mostly on our legs.

Nope, never, man, woman or child.  Sorry I don't want to get murdered that way.  You are just asking for trouble IMO, same with being the hitchhiker.  Looking for trouble big time.

Back when my parents were teenagers it was totally normal to hitchhike, but it is way too dangerous now.  I would not pick up or be a hitchhiker in this day.

Do people even hitchhike any more? It was common when I was young, but I don't see it any more.

I occassionally see a dirty scruffy looking  older guy hitchhiking, I never see  anyone young doing it anymore.  Most kids have cars, or find thier own rides without resorting to hitch hiking.   And when I see this guy hitchhiking, it kinda makes me laugh because he looks like a mass murderer!  Who is gonna pick HIM up??
