These are all great tips.  Thanks.  R does not have a smartphone.  I'm going to do a little research.  I was hoping for under $100, but I think I may need to spend a bit more so I don't regret getting her a useless one.

I got my dh one for fathers day from Target (Garmin one) and it was 93$ , It was on sale and not the lowest price one either .

We have a Garmin.  It's been great!

We have a Garmin, too, and have been very happy with it.  It has helped us avoid heavy traffic, and save gas - both features that we appreciate!

Cookie, I ended up buying the one you suggested at Bestbuy.  Thanks for the suggestion.  It was $127. Amazon sells it for that price too.  Hope she likes it!

I have been discovering many GPS's at the pawn shops! I know, used sounds odd, but their between $30 and $50

Probably because it costs more to update the maps than it costs to just go out and buy a new one.

Or maybe they're stolen?  I know we see a ton of reports of them stolen from cars around here.  (Of course probably a third of them are stolen from unlocked cars, but that's a whole other thread we could start on people's stupidity!)
