Financing an Item even though we can afford to buy it - Page 3

Best buy is awesome for this.  Right now I'm paying monthly for my washer.  I set up auto-payments so I don't have to worry about it.  I'm pretty sure unless something drastic happens, I'll be able to afford the $65 per month.

I will finance a purchase that is for a service that hasn't been completed first - like an installation or a contractor's services. That way I can dispute it with the credit card - which doesn't always work, BTW. However, once the job is done, that bill is paid off.

Keep in mind, in my example, I paid the bill in plenty of time. It was the company that decided I was late and there wasn't anything I could do about it.

We also did this with our vehicle.

We did this the same thing when I bought my very first mini van.  I had been driving a compact car but decided to trade up to a larger car when I had my second baby.  I was going to buy a used minivan but then Ford announced 0% financing for 48 months.  I was able to buy a brand new minivan and we kept all our cash in savings.  The best part was that my brother worked for a Ford dealer as the service manager and me always made sure that my van was in tip top condition.  That was also about 12 years ago and the interest we made on that money was a lot more than it is today.

I've done it before, but I don't ever want to do it again. You never know what will happen in that time. I would just prefer to pay it while I have the money for it.

If I have cash, I pay cash.  The Bible tells us that it is not a good idea to be in debt to each other. If we think about it, there are lots of good reasons for this. As many others have mentioned already, you never know what might come up in the next few months. I only finance if something is COMPLETELY necessary, and I do not have the cash to pay for it. Then, I try to make a sensible decision about what I am financing. It is easy to go a little over the top - i.e. "If I have to finance it anyway, I might as well get the front loader.  After all there is free financing...", or buy any vehicle that you like just because you are "approved".  Just because you are approved, doesn't mean that they payment will fit into your budget and lifestyle.

This reminds me of a family I know that used the Discover cash back bonus system.  They purchased EVERYTHING on their Discover card, but instantly wrote the amount down in the checkbook like it was already spent.  Then at the end of the month, they would add them all up, make sure it matched the Discover statement and make the payment.  As far as I know, this always worked for them, and they didn't have any problems.  I was tempted to do this also, but decided not to take the risk.  Probably for the better...I ended up getting layed off from my job, went back to school, etc.  It would have been really hard to make that next whole payment, and I very easily could have ended up on a bad road to just charging more and more on it because it was easy.

Hope it all works out for you, and that you are able to pay it off before you have to pay interest!  :)

I've done this and haven't had any problems with it!
