Do you pay fees for public school? - Page 4

post #31 of 35

public elementary school here ...no

public high school...just the kids going into grade 9...fee of $70 ( plus all the stuff they have to have the first day)

catholic elementary school...no

catholic high school...EVERY year a fee of $50 just to go to the next grade, PLUS its $50 PER sport, locker fees are $10 a year( we use the same lock so we do not have to pay the extra $5 for it), and other " fees" as the school year goes on( science labs, library dues to use their computers etc)

Public elementary school, there are no "fees" involved in registering. There are your normal school supplies, spirit wear, yearbook, extra activities, misc stuff that comes up. No textbook fee yet. They have lockers starting in the intermediate school, we aren't there yet so I can't say if they charge a fee.

I'm always shocked when people complain about paying for school supplies or small fees. When I homeschooled my kids, I probably spent a few thousand a year. So to me, paying $100 for school supplies feels like I'm getting off easy. Teachers spend hundreds of dollars fixing up their rooms and buying things for their class each month. I always buy extra now when it is on sale to give the teachers throughout the year, especially in January, when they start running out of everything. Look at what you would be paying for in private school tuition or for full day daycare. I don't see how anyone can complain about some school supplies. (not that anyone is in this thread, it is just we get into this discussion every year around this time!)

I'm always shocked too. Maybe because we've always paid or maybe because education is so important to me, and I feel that my kids got a GREAT education in our school system, but I think it's a small price to pay for all we get. I guess everyone sees things differently, but I never complained one time about it.

It's called a materials fee here. It's $24 for my elementary school dd and $46 for my middle schooler.
