Who cares for your animals when you are away? - Page 2

ugh - we have such a hard time going anywhere because of the dogs (there are three of them).  The kennel gets expensive when we go on a week vacation but we have no family here and its too much to ask for a neighbor or friend etc to come here to walk all three, feed etc so its off to the kennel.  Overnight or a day or two, my dh's foreman at work comes over to feed them and he usually takes care of the outside animals as well (even for those long trips too).

We have a pet sitter. It is a little pricy but they adore her. Plus it is cheaper then finding a kennel for 3 pets.

I have two very good friends who alternate for me. One comes in the morning and early afternoon, then the other comes at bedtime. We have a fenced yard so they just have to let the dog out for a few minutes and make sure he has food and water. They also check on our cockatiel and feed and water her if needed. One friend will sometimes take the dog for a walk and then put a movie in and play with the dog and the bird for awhile so they don't get lonely. They also get the mail, and the last time one of them cleaned up my entire yard of leaves...a huge task. I am very blessed to have both of them.

I do the same for them when they need something done. We don't usually pay each other, we just help when needed.

Our vet does boarding, so he stays there.  Think it's about $15 a night there, which isn't too bad, when we had our last dog we boarded him at PetSmart a couple times and that was $23 a night, but he was also a bigger dog.  Like Cookie said we have to make sure he is up to date on shots and usually he needs a shot the week before he boards.  The last time he wasn't due for his shots until a week after he boarded, so we just had him get his shots while he was there.

We have boarded them but this year we had a sitter stay at our house while we were on vacation.  I think this is the way we will go from now on.  My dog is very neurotic and she was much happier being left at home than being boarded.
