What does overweight mean to you? - Page 3

I don't judge overweight people because I don't know what their problem is and I don't like people judging me for being overweight.

I don't judge them. I've been at 200 pounds before, it is horrible!! Actually, now that I'm a Beachbody coach I think about how I can help them. My dad has gained a lot of weight and has health problems, I'm trying to get him to get on Shakeology. I've been encouraging my friends to workout with me.

My passion is child nutrition and it breaks my heart to see obese children. I mean really breaks my heart and makes me angry for them. If a child is obese, the parents should feel guilty for raising them to be that way. You never see obese children coming from healthy families.  It is a vicious cycle. It comes from lack of knowledge, about food, nutrition, cooking, time management. They tend to rely on soda and fast food meals. Most of the time they are in denial about their lifestyle, sometimes they know they need to change, but don't commit. It is very, very, sad.

Technically according to BMI I am obese by a few pounds.

As a nurse I've encountered patients that are extremely obese. We are talking 500 plus pounds.  Honestly I usually think it's just sad that someone would let themselves get that big.

I do judge in my mind when I see a morbidly obese child and the parents are huge as well. I have strong opinions on this. It's abuse to starve your child so I think it's abuse to feed them a diet that makes them morbidly obese. I have seen kids at zoos that were too fat to walk more than 10 feet without getting short of breath. That is just wrong imo.

This kills me. I get so upset seeing that. And it seems like it is the bulk of children who fit that criteria! There are more overweight and obese children than children at a healthy weight. These kids aren't driving themselves to McDonalds or driving to the store and doing the weekly grocery shopping, it is absolutely the parents fault (barring a medical issue of course)

It is sad how big kids are getting. I have a naturally stick thin daughter. I actually have to tell her she looks fine and healthy. Lately I have told her not to let anyone tease or bully her due to her size. She is a very skinny 57 pounds at 10.5 years old. Her 5 year old sister weighs only 7 pounds less and is tall.

I think there are a lot of reasons for so many people being overweight now compared to the past.

There are a lot more pre-packaged meals available, and people seem to have less time, or people just don't cook anymore, so they grab those up and they are full of hidden calories and extra sugars.

HFCS - many believe our body does not metabolize that the same way as sugar.

When I was a kid, mom bought pop for holidays. It was a treat. I remember being so excited when there was pop in the house for the 4th of July. Nowadays, people drink pop every day, buy 2-3 litres of it at a time, serve it at meals, order it in restaurants. We never did that.

Kids used to go outside and play and ride bikes in the summer. They would go out in the morning & come in for meals. My friends kids have bikes - they are allowed to ride them up and down the driveway. They can't play outside their yard. "Times have changed" because there is, apparently, a child molester on every corner. Kids sit at the computers and play games instead of going outside to play. They get driven 1/2 mile - 1 mile to school instead of walking to school like they did "back in my day."  LOL.  We didn't have snacks for between meals. If I was hungry before dinner, mom told me there were apples. Not chips. We got chips for holidays.

I do think some people are hindered by health problems. I tried many many diets, exercised a lot, had a personal trainer, etc. My PCOS always made it harder. But in the last year I was able to lose over 40 lbs on my own using myfitnesspal.com. Maybe it was because I made a bigger commitment to it, but I don't think so. I gained weight with weight watchers. I toned up at the gym but never lost weight. I had to make this a priority - work less at cleaning house or gardening. It was a trade off.

I have a friend from high school - she was a big girl then and still is. Looks like the michelin tire man. She has tried so many things including hospital liquid diets. She works out nearly every day with a personal trainer. I read her fb posts all the time about the workouts he puts her through, but she looks just the same. Maybe she would be even more enormous if she didn't do it. I don't know. I think there must be a metabolic problem with her. She doesn't eat everything in sight. I feel sorry for those folks on the biggest loser - some are HUGE. A lot of time the weight seems tied to depression, and it becomes a vicious cycle.

I have a gf from college who was going through this same problem. The females in her family are all larger but they are all very active. She was on a diet program and exercised regularly but her weight never changed. I suggested she talk to a dr and she was just about to when her mom found out that her issue was hormones and her thyroid. So my friend went in and yep there wasn't something working right inside. Now her and her mom have gotten on therapy and my friend is excited to have lost over 50lbs over the last year. Sometimes there is something going on inside.

It depends where I see them.  If I see them at a restaurant with a huge plate of fattening food, yes I do think no self control.  I saw an extremely overweight person at the pool yesterday who said she decided to get some exercise and to heck with how she looked, I thought, "good for you!" and thought that was great.  I see obese people in wheelchairs and can totally understand that, I have a family member with huge disabilities and she cannot walk let alone exercise, and the drugs she has to take to stay alive make her overweight.  When I see young girls overweight I just feel sad because I know they are going to have a hard time of it.  I'm only 116 lbs. and I am very hard on myself.  I was Always the skinny little one and I hate it now that I'm not.
