This is what we are concerned about with this friend. He isn't very mobile and has horrible fluid retention in his legs and since he has no medical coverage who knows how bad it really is.

I think there probably are a few people unable to work due to overwhelming depression, but I feel MOST people can and should work even if they have depression. For the one in Ruthie's post, that would be ridiculous to give it to her. She REFUSES to take medication to make herself better, so she can't expect others to support her when she's doing nothing to help herself. If the side effects bother her, then try a different drug. Are the side effects any worse than being unable to work? So to me, while a few may deserve it, it's also horribly abused. Just like all social welfare, many take advantage when they shouldn't.

I was pondering obesity as a disability yesterday. Not sure about that one.

Off topic but obesity is NOT a valid excuse for disability imo. You got that way because of your lifestyle choices more than likely. Find a job where you can continue to sit on your arse.

I think too many people use depression as an excuse for disability. I've known people that were so depressed and suicidal that the only thing that  helped were ECT treatments. Those people could not have functioned in a work environment during those times of depression.

I had a gf mention to me that she had a building manager while she was renting that was a paraplegic so when we were talking about disabilities she said he would manage the paperwork and fix anything and everything that was in his capabilities to do. With all the different types of jobs out there that someone can do, there isn't much of an excuse for some disabilities. I watched some reality show where the guy said he couldn't work because his back injury left him unable to lift things...umm so do something that doesn't involve lifting. He would sit at the computer all day, get a job doing something similar. Some disabilities are completely debilitating but there are jobs for people that would be able to work around many disabilities, especially physical ones.
