Surprising ways to entertain toddlers

What surprising ways to entertain toddlers have you discovered by accident?  I remember once giving a pad of Post-its (the tiny ones) to my daughter and she LOVED ripping them off.  I filed that idea away for later because it was perfect entertainment on an airplane ride we took.

Boxes. Holy moly, cheapest entertainment around.

We have a coffee table (abt. 3 feet in diameter) in our living room that spins. When my nephew (3) was here we took everything off of it except some coasters (rubber ones) and let him spin them off the table. He LOVED it! We have since used it for several little ones (and some adults!) to keep them entertained smile.gif

I agree- my kids are 10 & 12 and they STILL like playing with boxes!

When I taught toddlers at. Day care center I had an arsenal. I bought plastic eggs for almost nothing after Easter. They loved playing with those! If we were sitting quietly and had to wait for a few minutes (like for a meal to arrive), I would take a piece of masking tape and put it on the back of their hands. They loved it. They would sit or up to 10 minutes picking it off and putting it back on.

a little cup of sprinkles or tiny cereal. They'll spend forever picking up each individual piece with their chubby fingers.

When I need a group of preschoolers to calm down I pull out a bag of dum dums. Each kid gets one, on the count of 3 they all take their wrappers off at the same time and start licking. The game is to see who can eat theirs first without sucking or biting, only 1 lick at a time. If you talk, suck or bite  you lose your sucker and you are out. The winner usually gets a sticker. Amazes me how well this works. I did this at vbs one year with 24 2-4 yr olds. The ladies helping just sat at the back of hte room laughing at how crazy it was and that it worked!

I don't like to use food as a tactic in that manner. But that must have been a sight to see!

A box of tissues. I would get them fairly cheap and let Ds pull them out one at a time. I would simply fold up the tissues when he was done, put them in a gallon zip loc bag and stick them in car. He also loved to spin all the toliet paper off the roll. I would buy cheap rolls and let it go..We would again put the tp in the car for emergencies.
