What do you think of running barefoot?

Here is what one website said on the benefits of running barefoot:

Why run or walk barefoot?

  1. Strengthen the muscles in your feet
  2. Be injury free thanks to proper foot and body mechanics
  3. Increased sensory perception (and running pleasure)
  4. Run easier and faster and be injury-free for life

Do you know anyone who does run barefoot?  Would you try it if it promised no injuries?

I'm barefoot as often as I can. I run the hill in my backyard barefooted usually (It's steep and my heel would slip out of my sneakers). I can't imagine running barefoot on a street though (walking, yes). If there was any shard of broken bottle I would find it haha

I can't even stand barefoot. I have shoes on the majority of my waking hours. I have plantars facetious and have lots of pain without my shoes with inserts. Also I can't imagine how cut up your feet would be.

I wouldn't run barefoot.

It sorta makes sense though, they tell you not to put sneakers/shoes on babies and when they are learning to walk it's best to be barefoot.

In FL the fire ants would kill you.

~ I don't run. My spine is partially fused so I feel every foot-fall. I need some of the cushioning that shoes provide.

~ The inflammatory arthritis (that fused my spine) flares up if I spend too much time barefoot or without proper shoes.

~ Diabetics develop foot wounds easily, which have a very difficult time healing. Many a diabetic has suffered amputation due to foot injuries.

~ If I didn't have shoes on my feet, what would I use to kill spiders and other bugs?

I have no desire to do it.  Your feet must really need to toughen up over time to stand it.  I have problem wearing flip flops which don't give my feet any support.  I'm sure barefoot running would do the same thing to me.

my ankles and my back can't tolerate it for very long. My niece runs in those shoes that have toes in them. Looks almost like a rubber molded foot glove. She swears by them and is a real athlete. I couldn't do it myself though. Heck, I can't even wear flip flops or flats :/

I don't run unless someone icky is chasing me.

I go barefoot at home most of the time, including out in the yard.

I do put on shoes to mow.

Well, I normally wouldn't say this, but I hope you don't run too often!  smile.gif
