What is a "cheap" vacation for you , how do you budget it out?

or your $$ allowance for vacation.

remember last year, I was thinking about going to Prague... well in the end we didn't as dh had to travel back to the states.

Anyways, I found a really really good deal on a vacation for us, I am excited, just have to wait to book til dh gets back again.

Here goes:

Flight from London to Bratislava  £240.00 for all five of us

£50.00 to park our car at the airport for a week  (looked into trains but the time is not early enough for the flight and actually more money)

£80 for a week's car rental with budget, I found an awesome coupon code that brought it down by £100

£300 for a week in a cottage.

Total about £670.00 for a family of 5 for a week.

I didn't add in food, cause we would be eating at home anyways.  the cottage has a kitchen

I suppose I need gas to and from the airport would be about £35.

So what do you think?  I have never planned out a vacation like this before.  In fact the last time we had a vaca was when mini dd was 16 months old and we had a cabin for free in NC.

what else am I missing?

Budget a small amount for eating lunch or dinner out atleast for one day. If you are out exploring it may be a bother to go back to the cottage to eat a meal. Also budget for some form of entertainment. You may want to get a tour or visit a museum or such on one day. Sounds like you found an amazing deal!

I am also thinking you might want to do something fun that is local and costs some money. You'll need to budget for those excursions.

When we go on vacation we usually do some sort of outing almost every day. It makes no sense to me to go to somewhere I've never been before and hang around the house/condo, even when we go on beach vacations. We still usually do an outing every day. If you're just doing sight seeing or if there's a beach, etc obviously those things are free. But museums, zoos, historical buildings, etc will cost an entrance fee. Plus we usually eat out one meal a day even though we have a kitchen. Again part of the allure of going somewhere new is eating the local food. So we'd eat lunch out while on excursions, or eat dinner out after we got home. But at least for us, we ate one meal out a day, with the other two in the condo/house.

Just curious....I have no idea about the conversion rate of pounds to dollars.

yes, I do need to think about eating out.

I have checked the local attractions and for what we want to do it isn't really that expensive.

This would be conversion of pounds to euros, and at the moment it's about 1 Euro to 80p.  So we are on the upside of that.  As far as the conversion your end, it really doesn't matter what the pound to dollar is, cause at the moment we are earning pounds and spending pounds, but I think it is a dollar to about 65p.

what do you allot for eating out?  I think with what I have already, we could do it around £1000.  that's about £300 for eating out ect....

No, I know you won't be spending dollars, but I was having a hard time telling what was a good deal or NOT a good deal because I don't know the conversion rate of pounds to dollars. I was just trying to be able to talk in "dollars" if that makes sense. As far as budgeting for eating out? We don't budget. I always try to get the very best deal I can on the place we stay and routinely get places discounted at least 25%. Then we eat 2 meals a day in the house/condo. But we do eat out as I said one meal a day. We are currently feeding 4 adults. We don't eat fast food, sandwiches or pizza type things since we can eat that at home. So we might drop quite a bit on dinner or even lunch. But we don't budget it. We just eat it and then worry about the credit card bill coming in when we get home LOL. I've never budgeted for a vacation.....just tried to be as economical as possible if that makes sense. We could probably easily spend $300 or more a wk on the food if I count what we eat in the condo plus what we eat out....but as I said....I have 4 adult eaters so no kids meals here or shared meals. Hope that helps, and have a great time!! When are you going?
