I love to paint and i'm critical of myself all the time. I just recently attended an arts &craft show and seeing some of the items for sale has inspired me to seriously think about turning a fun hobby into a profit. My latest obsession is painting on rocks and stones.I can paint on other objects too and got lots of ideas this weekend.

Check out my pics in the gallery ( mods, if you can figure a way to post them in this thread for me i will be greatful). So let me know if i have a chance at this and what prices i should be asking.

Very cute! When it comes to being critical of yourself, that's par for the course. You're just going to have to get over it - smile.gif

The rock is cute. I personally wouldn't buy it but rarely buy things at craft fairs that aren't exceptionally useful.

I think the questions you should be asking yourself are:

~ Do friends ask you to paint one for them?

~ Do friends and family enjoy getting your work as gifts?

~ Have you tried selling your work at small venues like local shops or school/church fundraisers?

If there is a Christmas crafts fair coming up, you might try selling a few items. The investment won't be much for a one-time event and you'll get a better feel for how this would work out for you.

As a person who attends a lot of art and craft fairs, I encourage you to find a UNIQUE niche - something you can call all your own. Don't do what other people are doing. I by-pass a lot of booths merely because I've been-there-seen-that.

If i were to sell them i would tell people they would make great paperweights or garden decor. I originally started painting stones because my neighbor lady told me she puts stones in her flower pots to keep the squirrels from digging in them. I thought, if i painted them up people wouldn't keep asking me why i have rocks in my planters. Then i found a website by an artist who paints on rocks and sent her an email asking her tons of questions. She said she was self taught in the art and gave me some book suggestions with good illustrations/directions and i went from there. I have had lots of family and friends say they want one of my rocks.......though they said nothing of paying for one. They give me encouragement whenever i post a newly finished one on Facebook.

I got lots of other ideas from the Art show i attended on Saturday. What i really want to do is take some painting lessons, but i can't find anyone around here that gives them other than the Technical college and their schedule doesn't really work with mine. I would LOVE someday to be able to paint landscapes, still life and old buildings/barns on canvas with acrylics.

I love the animal ones, you see flowers on rocks all the time (although I've never seen a hosta on one and love it!) but the animals are much cuter and far more original imo  The animals also seem more decorative if they were to be displayed in the home. I think landscapes and architecture on rocks would also be really gorgeous, and you can practice on those without investing in any canvas, get the bones down until you are comfortable with doing it on a larger scale and with more detail. I know when I'm drawing something new I do a ton of mini pictures to get myself more familiar with the subject or technique before tackling the big print.

Wow, those are nice!  You definitely have a talent with painting!

Is there a little gift shop in your town that you could work out a deal with to sell them for you?

WOW! Great work. I like the animal ones best too. My DD would love one of those.

Another good idea if you live near a college campus would be to make college logo ones. Either just the letters (like IU for Indiana University, etc) or with their mascot if it's something you could draw. I would love to have some for my kids I know with their college logos on them and you could maybe even sell them in the college bookstore! Of course if you have no big colleges around that won't work!

I can't tell from the pictures, but how big are they?
