I think sometimes people think that when parents suggest "books" or in your case the gift card, they don't believe it's actually what the child wants. I am always telling people that my 2yo wants books for holidays. They think I'm making it up. They wouldn't want books so they can't understand why she would want that. The girl loves to "read." It's frustrating.

I hate feeling like people think I'm lying when I recommend a gift at their behest... yes.. I'm lying about something that it makes no sense for me to lie about... it doesn't get me anything and I would hate to see my kids get something they didn't care for... why would i lie!
For these people who thinking you are making up what you kids what (that sounds so much better than lying) just tell them to go ask the kids. That is what I use to do, when my ex would ask me what to get dd, and I would tell him clothes and he thought I was just making it up, so that I wouldn't have to buy clothes with cs.

He's a nice man. The kids enjoyed him. My husband enjoyed his visit. But I guess I have problems with a man who walked out on his family all these years ago and now shows up to be grandpa. He does it with both of DH's sisters and their kids too. The only one who seems to think it is odd is me and my MIL, who currently isn't speaking to anyone. And, for all my reservations about FIL, MIL is worse.

I probably should have given more suggestions. He was here when she bought the Kindel so I thought that made sense. This man is new to our lives, he walked out on DD's family when DH was 8, 9, or 10 and this reintroduction to our lives is ... It's odd. For the nine years, almost, that I have been a parent, the only grandparents my kids have had has been my mother, my father too but he is deceased. Now I have this man, he visited for a week, we all had a nice time but he is pretty much demanding full grandpa rights and me, being skeptical in nature, I struggle with that.

My MIL was estranged from her dd for most of the time that I have been married to Dh. As she got older and looked back on her life, I think she realized that life is indeed short. She started reaching out to her again. My SIL was skeptical and even made a comment to me about her reaching out now that she is on her deathbed (not really--but she was making a point)--although when she really needed her, when her kids were little, she was no where around. Her kids, who are adults with families of their own, never really knew their grandparents. So your FIL is probably realizing his mistakes and trying to amend for them. I'd be skeptical too, though.
