While I don't think maybe that was the best choice of a word to use, I think being denied her diploma over this is a little extreme.

I think the school is being ridiculous, but seriously, she should just write the apology letter, get her diploma and move on.

Well, it's not like she dropped the F bomb.  Seriously?   I have heard teachers utter worse.  I think they are being ridiculous and need to just give her the diploma that she obviously worked very hard to get.  I think one little curse word (not even one in my book)--probably the only offense she has committed in high school--can be overlooked for what I assume she has accomplished.

The school is being stupid.

Read this yesterday. She shouldn't have said it but the school is just making a fool of themselves. Give the girl her diploma and let her move on with her life.

I don't consider it a curse word. It is in the bible, after all. She could have said "how in Hades do I know" intead of "how the heck" or "how the hell". It all implies the exact same thing, and using that word is not shocking at all. It is common. I wouldn't apologize. I'd just tell them to mail me the diploma I earned, give them the finger and be on my way...

They should give her her diploma, but I guess I disagree with those thinking it's no big deal. I think it's ridiculous to curse in a graduation speech.

I agree ... they approved "heck" which in reality isn't any better than "hell" - they mean the same thing. They should have told her to remove the expletive completely. The sentence still works and is still just as funny.

THAT is why I'm saying they are being stupid.

There are just some things you don't put in a graduation speech or any public speech, especially one that is being attended by such a wide and diverse group. They shouldn't have approved the "heck" and she shouldn't have changed it to "hell". But what is done is done. Make mention and move on.
