Pig Roast

Has anyone ever done one? Or even been to one?

DD and I were at the meat locker on Friday and someone hollered that a pig was coming through. I assumed they were talking about a box with pig meat ... But they were talking about a real life dead pig, head and all, smiling at us. I was taking back and DD handled it pretty well.

But it made me think, might be kind of fun to do one of these days. We would have to invite like everyone we know and I have no idea how we would cook and eat it up.

Any experiences?

Unless you count the one in Hawaii but there were so many people (and more than one pig) and they did it every night so I don't think of it as a big deal.

People around here do them. You can be driving down some country lane and smell the heavenly scent then see the smoke rising from someone's yard. We have wild boar here so I guess it is pretty common and a nice break from all that chicken.

I've been to a few. As cookie said, I went to a large one in Hawaii at a luau. And I went to one a friend had a zillion years ago. I would NEVER try to have one on my own, and don't really get the appeal at all.

Years ago, I was at a wedding and they had a pig roast. Pretty cool!

We had one for our grand opening when we first moved down here and opened up our business.  We knew nothing of how to do it, but my cousin is from here for more than 20 years so he helped us put it altogether.  It was a huge success and people are still asking when we are going to host another one!!

I've been to a few but have a hard time when the main course is still smiling at you while you chow down!

Have been to many pig roasts, my co-worker has one every year. They have a big cooker that they use to cook it and it takes many many hours to cook it. I know my co-worker puts sauerkraut inside the one that they cook. So yummy, yes that face smiling at you can sometimes be hard to take.

I have been to a few, but I can't eat the pork when it still has the head and everything on it. Yuck! I just can't do it.

We've hosted one and been to countless others. In my mind it is exactly like a bbq, just with an added main dish. Some people eat meat but are sensitive/in denial about the fact that meat actually comes from a dead animal. Seeing it cooking when it still looks like an animal freaks some people out. If you know there are going to be hardcore vegetarians/vegans at the party be prepared for some waterworks or soapboxing though. It's easy for them to ignore a chicken breast, it's hard for them to be quiet about a pig on a stick, based on my past experiences anyway.

Here there are a couple farmers that have a big pig roast ever year.  The hosts do the pig (roast and carve) and the whole community is invited-- we're a small town.  Everybody else brings a side dish or dessert.  For people who don't want to eat the pig, there are plenty of other things to eat.  Also, which might make a difference, the pig has been carved before being put on the table.  We don't have to look at it's face.  It's a lot of fun.
