Soup: Homemade or Canned?

If you eat/serve soup, what do you use most often: homemade or canned?

Yesterday, DD was sick.  She had a stomach virus that DH had the previous week.  When he had it, I bought him several cans of chicken noodle soup to eat (once he could eat).  Yesterday, a friend came over to help me out, since she knew DH was traveling this week.  She made chicken soup for DD and was surprised when I told her I usually just bought it.  (I do make soups from scratch, but not often.)  Making it was actually super easy.  I am going to try to change my default response to soup from canned to homemade.  Basic soups, like chicken, ARE easy.  (Plus, now I have delicious meals stored in the freezer.  I wouldn't describe canned as "delicious".  LOL)

I rarely use canned soup, the only ones I occasionally buy are golden mushroom and french onion for certain recipes. I agree that chicken noodle soup is so easy to make and you can control the sodium content.

I make chicken stock at least twice a month in my CP (I let it simmer for 2 days), during the winter months it's closer to once a week since I roast whole chickens more often when it's colder. I use my stock for soups and stews and to cook rice and quinoa in my rice cooker. Homemade stock is so good for you and a great nutrient boost for my kids.

I make a number of soups/stews on a regular basis, not so much in the summer:

italian vegetable soup

italian wedding soup

butternut squash soup

chicken posole

chicken tortilla soup

turkey black bean chili

tom kha gai

turkey rice soup

chicken corn soup

cabernet beef stew

I usually make homemade.  However, if someone is sick and I hadn't planned on making soup, we will use can.  Or if someone doesn't want leftovers, they open a can of soup.

I make vegetable soup and stew from scratch always. I do use Progresso canned tomato soup (LOVE IT!) and occasionally a few others. We aren't big soup eaters, so there's usually a few cans in the cupboard if someone wants something, and then I occasionally make a big pot of the veggie soup or stew.

Homemade usually, but I do use Campbells canned tomato soup in vegetable soup and in cooking.  I also like Progresso light soup for lunch when I don't have the time to make it homemade.

Right now I'm making some tofu noodle chicken soup for lunch!

I dont care for canned soup at all.  The only canned soup I buy is the cream of mushroom/celery/chicken for casseroles and such.  My kids like canned tomato soup, but I don't buy it unless they put it on the grocery list we have posted on the frig.

Homemade soups we eat a lot of:

minestrone

split pea with lots of ham (kids & DH love it)

chicken , veggie, rice

chicken noodle (to add variety I will buy the frozen egg noodles from GFS.. DH loves those)

Turkey veggie with dumplings (I cheat and use Bisquick dumplings - again DH loves this)

hamburger veggie

lots and lots of lentil soup - mostly with red lentils but I have urad lentils & split moong beans that I make occasionally)

cheese veggie soup (chicken broth, frozen veggies and velveeta cooked and pureed.... what can be easier)

I have tried making white bean soup, but family prefers split pea

I have a recipe for tortellini spinach soup that is good, but I never seem to have the ingredients.  Same issue with the Thai pumpkin soup

I made chicken stock for the first time in my pressure cooker last night and omg is it fast and delicious!  I pulled two more roasted chicken carcasses out of the freezer a little bit ago and I am cooking those up right now.  DH14 wanted the chicken stock for dinner instead of the actual dinner I prepared..."well, can you tell me when the soup is ready and I can have that instead?".... they love home made soup.

Homemade unless we are sick, then dh likes campbell's chicken noodle or I like lipton cup-a-soup chicken noodle.  I think we like them because it's what we had as kids when we were sick & they're so salty, I always want something salty when I'm sick.

Always homemade.  I don't remember the last time I bought canned soup (I don't even get the creamed stuff because I don't like casseroles made from it, either).
