signs of the economy and weather

I went with my son to the apple orchard today with his class. Apparently it was their worst crop ever, they lost about 75% due to weather. Not only were prices amazingly high ($12 a dozen donuts! Half gal of cider $6.99! Honeybear container of honey $6.99!) but they couldn't allow the kids to pick apples from the trees exactly. They had to ship apples in from other parts of the country. Upick was $1.99 a lb! Instead of picking from the trees they had rain gutters throughout filled with apples. Their marketing tagline this year is "It's raining apples!" LOL

Here are some of their prices. You can really feel the economy hitting here. Losing 3/4ths of their crop could do them in if they don't jack up the prices. Yet with prices so high how can a family of 5 even afford to do this?

It's been on our local news several times how bad the apple orchards were hit.

I thought the rain gutters were an interesting solution in the orchard. The prices hurt though.

We did not even go this year. Sadley the grocery stores were cheaper because they buy in bulk.

That was an interesting way to do You pick!   I forget how bad most of the country has had it with the weather this year only because we didn't.

I know that they do that with pumpkin's too truck them in and set them in the fields. We actually tried growing our own this year. We have one and several forming of course this is from the seeds we planted and the birds moved for us. "Honey what is that growing over by the swing set?"

I am hoping that our u-pick has its orchards open. I had a lot of luck with my friends pear tree even canned a few jars.

I don't think those prices look too bad. There's a u-pick/pumpkin patch/tractor ride near here and it's $17/person - in a normal year.  I'm hoping the vacant-lot-by-the-freeway pumpkin patch is going to be cheaper.
