School Pictures

I haven't seen a thread complaining about school pictures yet! lol

Not only are they SO expensive, I have to pay before I see the picture! What if it turns out horribly? Will they give me my money back?

What?!?!  That is crazy.  Will they let you get re-takes?

We get a proof first, and then we choose our package.  They take them twice a year; once at the beginning, and then a spring picture with a bunny.

I usually buy the smallest package of school pictures (maybe $25?), simply because I want a couple and would like the class pic for ds.

I like spring pictures much more, we usually spend more money when they send the choices home first. I'm convinced they spend more time making sure kids are positioned correctly, smiling nicely and look nice and neat when they have to sell the pic to the parents afterward.

ETA: Addimom, in elementary school, Fall pictures are usually purchase before the picture is taken (they need it for their records) and Spring pictures are where you can see them first. It's pretty standard

We get a proof first as well. We then order our package. If we don't like the proof then we can request a retake. I always just get the cheapest package available (which is still like $30!) and then scan in a photo and print what I want. I'm always baffled by the million wallet size prints that are in all the packages...do people ever use them?

The fall pictures can be retaken is they are horrible. I always get the cheapest package.

The pictures in the spring I like better because the package comes home and you choose to buy or not after you see it.

That is interesting.  I did not realize that was a common practice.  Gotta' say, I am glad our school doesn't do it that way.

It's annoying, and I know from being a teacher (at least at the schools I taught at), the records and cum files usually used the original picture and not a retake, if there was one.

I prefer tp take my own pictures of my kids but try to be the parent who doesn't order school pictures. Lol. I always order a cheaper package.

Ok, I asked a mom with older kids if they do Spring pictures.  The cheapest decent package is $20, then I'd still have to add on an 8x10, so I'll probably spend $30.  Not TOO bad, but I only have one kid in school so far!!

Fall pics are always done without being seen first, but you can always get retakes. I think that prices have actually gotten much cheaper over the years. I always buy the smallest pack that has a 5x7. This year that was only $18 for each of my 4 boys. There are cheaper one too. This includes a class picture for my elementary aged son. Obviously there are no class pics in jr high or high school. I get these because then I don't have to mess with taking them somewhere else. Plus the only time I didn't order school pics (17) years ago, my son died unexpectedly right after they were taken and I felt horrible I didn't have any. Luckily, my cousin was able to call the company and buy me some.
