Could you give up your "vices" in order to save your family money? - Page 2

We gave up cable, our home phone, and security system. We cut back to just instant watch on Netflix, trying to convince Dh to give it up now, since we pay for Amazon Prime and get free instant watch there. We only rent from Redbox when I have a code and there is a movie the whole family can watch. We have moved to eating out only once every two weeks during our pay week. Sodas would be the hard one for Dh and I, I am going to try making some of the flavored waters and wean myself off. Not so much about money as health issues. I don't think I could cut my food budget back much more or we would be eating nothing but boxed mac and cheese.

The only vice I think I have is chocolate. Lots and lots of chocolate. I'd cut back for sure to save money but we seriously still have halloween candy so it's not an issue.

If we were in a situation where every extra dollar was crucial to getting by, then of course.

We are doing exactly this, we bought a smaller house ( half the size and no garage)last november but wont move into it for another 4-6 weeks so in the mean time we have been paying for both places. To save money now and after we move bc pay will be less we have cut the soda habbit in half, no move home phone or $170 cable now we pay 35 for internet and pay for basic netflix, only eat out if out of town for dr visit about twice a month and not for expensive fancy food, when contracct is up we are getting basic cell phones for atlest half the price we paying now, and just in general not buying extra stuff at the store and not going to thrift stores just to "look" when were bored lol.

If we had to I would. I am thankful I don't have to but if I did I would. We have cut back on eating out and on cable. If we needed to we would cut out eating out, cable, my hair color appointments, alcohol, and hobbies. I would also use our pantry/stockpile and this would help for a while.

cable has been gone for awhile now and no one misses it( which is good as its not coming back!)

DH gave up beer awhile ago...drinks juice or water when watching tv

DH is slowly giving up his addiction to chips...he use to eat 5 bags a week...he is down to one a week now( soon it will be gone altogether and the doctor will be ever so happy)

We have given up tons over the past two years-cable tv, eating out (we are down to once a week), shopping for "things", movies, fast food stops for snacks/drink, etc. We are still trying to make ends meet (medical bills due to cancer are enormous) but at least we are holding our own. When my husband beats cancer, then we will eat out in celebration and enjoy a movie. Maybe. We will probably be reluctant to spend the money now that we ave learned to do without. :)

We have never given up cable but in the past have cut it down to basic basic, gave up a gym membership, eating out...When we have to cut back we do. We already live in a small home and decided just to keep it that way....

We gave up our security system about 6 months ago, our land line about 4 months ago and for about 3 months, we gave up our dish network. We used the internet for our tv entertainment and watched Netflix. We also had the 30 day free on DVD's but cancelled it before the time was up. We now have the Dish back but nothing else that we got rid of.I might start the DVD plan back up but I am undecided. Our cell phones and the internet are the lifeline so they were not even an option.

We have given up several vices. No cable/dish. No fast food/take out. We do have Netflix that we could give up if we have too. I think Internet (we pay $10/month) would be the hardest to give up, but we could do it if necessary. I do have an iPhone, that I would have a hard time giving up. My parents helped pay for it initially so they could FaceTime with us, and we call them every night that way. Well worth it for that daily contact.
