Dollar Stores

Do you really like them? I hate them, I think they sell nothing but lots of junk 99.5% of the time. My Mil purchased some Easter trinkets there for the kids baskets and its all already in the garbage. I swear she paid a $1.00 for something that probly costed less than .25 cents to make! I would rather her give the kids those wasted dollars she spent. Then they can at least make their piggy bank a little fuller.

Am I the only one who thinks this way?

Well yes and no. HOnestly, the kids don't care where they came from, and prbably enjoyed getting a trinket on Easter Morning. I don't HATE them, but I very rarely buy stuff like that from there. I really only end up in there if I'm looking for something specific. Like hair do dads for my girls or tights. YOu can't beat $1 for tights essp if they are just gonna be worn once. And if they get worn more than once, thats a bonus! LOL

Nope you arent, I think that way too. But it just depends on what you buy. I stay away from the toys as they are junk. I do buy packs of the brown & serve sausages (cause my son loves them) for a buck each, at Albertsons they are close to $2.50 ea.
I like to get wrapping paper, bows and gift bags and greeting cards there. I also like to get stationary / office supplies / party decorations. The dollar store i go to has some great things, I can obviously tell if the item Im going to get will break in 5 min. (mainly the toys)

In my experience with dollar stores, I've found that the quality varies from item to item. Some of the items are quite junky (like many of the kids' toys) but some of the items are of good quality. I've found that a lot of their no-name cleaning supplies work just as well as the name-brand ones. Some of their seasonal things are cute. It's a great place to pick up items for party bags. For my dd's party bags I found mechanical-type pencils, 6-packs of stickers, 4-packs of little notebooks, and 6-packs of cute lipglosses all for $1.

Well i'm in Canada and there's only one here I feel is worth the trip.. but it's awesome! Lots of great books, colouring books for the kids, craft supplies, kitchen supplies, etc.. and it's actually nice stuff! I don't like 'junk' either, but this one has some great stuff at it! I picked up 8 tea towels from this one a couple weeks ago and I love them! They wash up so thick and fluffy.. definitely like the ones that cost $5.00 a pop..

So all depends on the $ store and what you're buying in my opinion.. I don't buy the toys either.. would rather buy high quality and have it go through multiple kids!

I agree they do sell some junk (especially toys) but I have found many bargains in there. Recently I bought a matching porcelin toothbrush holder and hand soap dispenser the exact odd shade of green I needed to match my bathroom. I think you just have to pay close attention to what you are getting. I have also seen stuff cheaper elsewhere, ex; Giant brand hand soap is .79 regular price

I'm very selective about what I buy from dollar stores. I think they suck you in and you start thinking everything is such a great bargain but I agree that most of the stuff is cr@p.

I have a mental list of what I like to but in the dollar stores (actually pretty much only Dollar Tree-I don't like the others much). I never pick up toys unless it is a bag of rubber bugs, bouncy balls, or whatever for my prize box at school. But I like full-size cards for 2/$1, big bags of pretzels, and a few other things for my classroom. Some things are actually less than a dollar in a regular store, so you have to go in with a plan of what you're gonna buy.

I get wrapping paper and cards there, and sometimes paper plates and napkins for Daughter's birthday parties. I stay away from the cheap jewelry, since much of it contains lead.

I've found a few neat things that were a good price, especially Halloween decorations like "caution tape" that costs only $1 instead of the exact same thing for $2.99 in other stores.

I think it depends on the store and when you are there. Much of it is just luck of the day. I agree there is a lot of junk, but I have gotten some great deals there.

Just a few of the things I've bought that I don't think are junk:

baby tights
little tin baskets that hang on the door for flowers, etc (retail tag from Hallmark still on it said $15 - used them as cookie tins for Christmas
Books- Soft Shapes books still selling in stores for 7.95 (and other hardback books)
Coloring books/worksheet books, writing tablets- some I saw in Walmart for $3
4 pack activity/sticker books (currently sellingin Walmart for 1.67 each)
First years sippy cups
Stake for birdfeeder
Barbie brand clothing sets

And, even some of the junk works just great for keeping a 3 year old occupied for a day!
