Radical Frugality - Page 2

We drive around in our 1991 Toyota Camry.

We don't have cable TV or satellite TV. We do have rabbit ear antennas.

My kids know what it is like to sit down to a nutritious homecooked meal. I cook and bake almost all our food. Restaurants are for special occasions only. My kids have never been to a Burger King or McDonalds.

1. we don't have cable or satellite.
2. we drink tap water
3. we keep our cars for a long time. We just bought a new van with cash after selling my hubby's 94 integra.
4. We don't buy leather seats or dvd systems in our car(big gasp in our area of town)

1. Nearly all of my DD's clothing is from garage sales or second hand.
2. We only buy used cars.
3. I use off-brand diapers for half the cost of Pampers, etc.

The one thing that I won't do that I think is radical frugalality is dumpster diving.

Most of my daughters clothes come from Goodwill, consignment, or donations from friends.

My girls don't drink pop unless it's a treat when we go out to eat. Going out to eat in this family is for pizza or fast food.

I only get movies from the library.

we...

-read mags at the library (and even check them out, as you can do with last months or older issues)
-air dry (most) clothing on the deck
-We only eat out when we have a coupon (B1 G1 free, or free kids meals)...we have a lot of coupons!
-We have a "radio auction" in our town. We can call in and buy certificates examples would be $20 applebees certificate can be purchased for $15, Haircut certificates can be purchased fo $7 or $8 instead of paying $20 or more! Our radio auction is listed on line now too, so I go there and check weekly- we save anywhere from 30-60%!
-We go to a lot of rummage sales
- we have a water filter on the water coming out of the fridge, so we do not buy bottled water very often.
-We buy "year memberships" to several local things like the zoo (it pays for itself in 4 visits!), the waterpark (pays for itself in 5 visits) and the museum (pays for itself in only 3 visits) and our family likes to stay busy year around- so all of these memberships are very well worth it for us!

I wash and reuse ziploc bags.

I open the dishwasher after the clean cycle and let them air dry.

I cut my dryer sheets in half.

Got you beat!LOL WE drive a 1983 Camaro and a 1979 GMC truck! (we also have a 2002 Saturn for special occasions - which we paid cash for)

I color my own hair. (AND, since it is short, I can get two uses out of the same bottle!)

I only buy something if we have the money for it. If there is one of those 12 months no interest things going on, I will open a CD, figure out how much I need to get to the amount I need in 12 months (or whatever time span) and open one. Then I will pay it off when it matures and comes due. We saved a ton of money that way on our floors (approximately $700!).

We get the basic model cars when we buy cars - which I prefer to do used, but isn't always feasible. I don't see a need for power doors because, if they break, that is one more thing to fix. I have discovered that they don't really sell many mini-vans without power windows and locks, however.

Great thread!

-We drink tap water

-We don't buy "loaded" cars. No leather, sunroof, DVD player, 6 disc CD changer, or other un-necessary extras that add a ton to the car price. We also drive our cars until they die or start having major repairs on a regular basis.

-We line dry our bedding every time we wash, and regular clothing loads if time and weather permits.

Sometimes I think I am the only person (besides dh) who actually rolls my vehicle windows up and down with the crank!! I also have to lock or unlock each door with the key!!!
