What were you doing five years ago on 9/11? - Page 2

I was in the car driving my 2 1/2 year old ds and 6 month old dd to the playground. Dh tried calling me on the cell phone but couldn't get through--finally he did. He told me to turn on the radio. I just sat there in the parking lot and listened in shock & disbelief. That was the 1st morning in a long time that I didn't turn on the Today show while getting ready to venture out with the kids.

I stayed at the playground because I saw a bunch of Moms gathering and talking. My ds played while I held dd and I remember watching all airplanes fearfully---we live near an airport so we were always watching planes flying in.

A few weeks earlier I was out walking in my neighborhood on a beautiful morning w/the kids. It was such a good day & I remember thinking how wonderful it was to live in our country and how hard it must be for those to live in the middle east or northern Ireland. I was thanking God that we didn't have to live in that kind of fear. At that time in my life it was odd for me to be so reflective because I was always so busy with the kids & never took the time to really enjoy being a mom.

The days, weeks and months after I remember being so fearful and still am ever vigilant. That day changed who I was as I'm sure it changed the life of every American. We will never forget.

We were spending a few days in Sedona and were in our hotel room. DS had climbed in bed with me as DH took a shower. I turned on the TV and saw the horrible images they were showing live at that time, as there was no editing yet. I had ds go into the other room and play. I could only stare in horror. DH occasionally had to go to the WTC on business, and the officials at his company had just returned from there. I told DH as he came out of the shower and, as usual, he didn't believe me. Even though we were across the country, I saw the towers come down live. We called our families right away, as I know many did. What a horrible day. I think it is just insane that with all of our technology, we haven't caught Bin Ladin. Are we afraid to because we know this enemy, and the unknown could be worse? It's a scary thought. And now Christine Todd Whitman is backpedaling about how she handled her statements about how clean the air was to work in. She said that the air was basically safe, yet she is now blaming the supervisors on the site for not requiring respirators. The thefts by people in position of power for "artifacts" are below low. Yet, these people won't be prosecuted due to politics. Sooo very sad.

I was pregnant with my DS#1, and I was at work in a meeting. Our meeting was just beginning when a co-worker came in and said she heard that a plane went into tower 1, so we turned on the live CNN feed in our meeting and carried on with the meeting when we saw the plane went in tower #2, and there was utter silence in the room with 20-25 people. When our meeting finished 2 hours later, I went straight to my office to find about 10 voice mails on the phone (all from friends and family since I live 30 minustes from the Pentagon). We were allowed to go home on Administrative leave, but I chose to stay since traffic was crazy out there.
Our first hotel was under construction and DH was at the site, and two of the constructions workers had family who worked in the towers, and both of them lost their family members. It was so heart breaking.
I remember days after terror struck we had live CNN feeds playing in every office at work.
We rented United 93 this past weekend, and it just brought chillls down my spine just watching it.

I was in a Spanish class when a girl came in the room and began telling us... in Spanish. It took me a while to catch on. Then the school when into lock down and we were terrified. A month later my husband joined the Army.

I had just finished an all night shift at the ER and was trying to sleep. I was still at the hospital since I was too tired to drive home. But I tossed and turned and had an awful feeling- so finally I jumped out of bed and packed up to home. Passing through the lobby I saw a bunch of people gathered around the TV- I got there just in time to see the second plane hit. Very surreal. I just wanted to get home so I jumped in my car, and all the way home I listened to Dan Rather on the radio describing the collapse of the World Trade Center as it happened. I will never forget that.

Pregnant and had the miserable flu. Dh called me up and told me to turn on the tv, I did but was so sick I snapped it off and said "who cares?". It wasn't until I felt better that I realized the enormity of the situation.

I had just gottent o work when a co-worker called in to tell me she would be in late because she was watching the footage on the towers and planes on TV. I went and told my supervisor what was happening and we all went in the conference room and turned on the TV there. Some cried and some got on the phone. I got on the phone and call my DH (BF then) and he was still sleeping. I told him to turn on the TV. After that he watched CNN round the clock for weeks.

It is hard for me to watch the updates and hear the stories of the families that lost loved ones. I pray for them all the time.

I was with my brother. We were walking through the mall on our way to play Bingo when someone in one of the stores told us a plane had hit the Pentagon. I figured it was just a small plane. Partway through Bingo we learned about the twin towers. After Bingo we headed home to my house (I was supposed to take my brother to my moms) because I wasn't sure if the schools would be sending the kids home.

I had just been in NYC on Sept. 10th for a taping of the View. We were invited back for the taping of a new show on Sept. 11th and had considered going but decided against it. I was 6 months pregnant at the time.

I had just dropped off boys at preschool and was going to get my haircut. And I usally listen to the radio - but that morning we listed to some kid music so I didn't have the radio on. I get to the salon and everyone is standing around dumbstruck. I remember one person saying do you think this is real because we were only listening to the radio and couldn't see what was happening.

After I was leaving, I walked over to the radio shack store next door that had just opened and stood and watched the 1st tower fall. I was standing there numb thinking this can't be happening. Left the store and went straight to get my kids at school.

DH was traveling and he called me, and thankfully he was driving instead of flying so I felt better, but still, the not knowing what was happening was so scary.

Afterwards because all flights were grounded, I remember the stillness in the sky and remembering this is the only time I've never heard airplanes in the sky.

I will ever forget watching that on TV, and the feeling of utter sadness and anger at the same time.

The above post reminded me: at the time of 9/11, there was a lot of controversy going on about planes being allowed to fly over our suburb, our little enclave, if you will. Sky Harbor is a major airport, and people didn't like planes to be heard. Anyway, I remember, too, how quiet the skies were. People were saying after that, that they really wouldn't mind hearing that sound again. Of course, the sentiment didn't last but a few months before the arguing started again, but I was so sorry for those who couldn't get home due to the grounding and for those who could never get home.
