When/how do you exercise?

I really need to lose some weight, and I know the key to that is exercise. My problem thuogh is that I don't have the time! My family gets up at 5:30 to get ready for work and daycare. DS and I get home at 5pm, play for a few mins and then start dinner. After eating dinner, playing w/DS a little more and doing the bed and bath time ritual, its now 8:00 or 8:30. At this time I do the dishes, straighten the house a little and then take my own shower. Where in my day would be a good spot to fit in exercise? During the summer its so much easier b/c we go outside after work/daycare and play while dh cooks dinner on the grill. Winter is impossible though, I'm in WI and we have way too much snow this year! Any suggestions of fitting in enough excercise that would actually help me to lose weight?

1. Do you have stairs that you can run up and down?
2. I have mall walked before in the winter.
3. Could you fit in an exercise tape/show about 3 times a week?

I find it easiest if I do it as soon as I get home from work - 20 minutes on the bike and 10 minute dance video (one or the other if I'm really pressed for time). I can even put a large pot of water on to boil while I'm exercising. I make sure my weekday meals are VERY fast to prepare. I make enough on Sunday for leftovers Monday. Tuesday I make enough for leftovers Wednesday. Thursday or Friday - one is generally takeout/go out night, the other is "fend for yourself" night - scrounge for leftovers, have a sandwich, eggs, something like that.

I have 3 kids with only 1 in school so I have to fight for time to workout. Chances are you husband would be willing to handle bathtime so you could fit in a workout. They are normally willing to help us look better. Or you could get a workout in after the kiddos are in bed. Try to multi-task which Im sure you are already doing. But how old is your child can the be in the bathroom by themself for short periods? Also if you try and unload the dishes and load while your cooking you have less to do after dinner. Also if you child is to young to be left alone but plays in the tub supervised you can run in place in the bathroom, do squats, wall push-ups etc. Anyway, those are some suggestions it would help if I knew they age of your child/ren. Playtime can also be a workout. No matter what the age you can do the airplane where you put your feet gently on their stomach and hold their hands and lift them up and down. Or lay on the ground and just lift your legs with them on it. Lots of stuff you can do with you children. On top of that you may find a video that you and your hubby like to do together. Working out together and spending time at the same time.

I say have your dh do bath time (mine does in out house while I clean up after dinner) and use that 20 minutes to do a tape or jump on a teadmill or bike, or even just head outside and do a brisk walk or run/walk. If he won't do bath time, maybe fit in something while dinner is cooking on the days where you just throw something in the oven and have to wait. Then there's always the fun choice... get up at 5 instead of 5:30 and get a 20 min workout in before everyone is up.
Do you have any equipment in your house? If not, keep an eye on craigslist, we bought a recumbant exericse bike for $50 off there a few years ago and it's been great for a quick workout.
I would also definitely schedule some "me" time on the weekends when your dh is home. Make it a priority to work out on Sat and Sun, then you won't feel so bad when a couple days go by during the week and you haven't had time.

DS is 20 mths old, so he really can't be left alone too much. The bathroom exercises while he is in the bath was a really good idea though! As is making dh do bath time occasionally. He has a crazy schedule and isn't always home in time, but when he is I think I will start having him take over every once in awhile. We don't have any equipment in house, but I am on the lookout at Craigslist for a bike or treadmill. I think that would be my best bet. I can't really do any tapes/dvds b/c our living room is too small, no room to even move anything around. I'll keep these tips handy though, thanks ladies!

Oh, my I know how hard it is to fit in exercise!!
Could you try taking gym shoes to work, then do some walking at lunch time? Then, eat lunch at your desk?

I wouldn't walk so hard that you work up a sweat, but just enough to burn some energy! Maybe some co-workers would like to join you! This was pretty popular where I used to work.

The walking at lunch is what I do during summer/fall, but winter spring is pretty much out of the question. The temp is 10 on a good day, and the sidewalks are so full of ice and snow that I fear for my life just walking out to the car each morning!

I bought the 10 minute excerise tape, that has 5 different work-outs in 10 min.

And every morning I get up 20 minutes earlier than normal and excerise.

Not sure how old your kids are but I am sure they would like to excerise in the evening with mom. Just turn on a tape and you do the tape and let them do their thing!

Running is the best exercise (assuming you have no problems) for losing weight and gaining muscle. So even a 10 minute run in place while your kiddo is in the bathroom. You can actually buy weighted hand gloves so you get extra arms workouts and weights. I got mine from beachbody.com
