Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

I love this recipe. My daughter has always been a big fan of the grocery store cookies that have frosting and sprinkles on top. They are good and they come decorated for whatever the season. They also are very expensive - a box of 10 is on sale for $4.00! Not to mention they come in a large plastic box and I'm attempting to cut back on the plastic intake in my life.

Anyway, my mom found this recipe in her Taste of Home magazine and I love this cookie! They even stay soft for a long period of time. With different colors, cookie cutters, and sprinkles you can have cookies for whatever season as well. I make them about once a month.

Sour Cream Sugar Cookies
1 cup shortering
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup sour cream
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soade
1/4 tsp salt

In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, sour cream and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or until easy to handle.

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/4 in thickness. Cut with cookie cutter.

Place 1 in apart on baking sheets lightly coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until set. Cool for 1 minute before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting (I usually cut this 1/2)
1 cup butter, softened
9 cups confectioners sugar
3 tsp vanilla extract
2/3 - 3/4 cup milk

In large mixing bowl, cream butter until light and fluffy. Beat in sugar and vanilla. Add enough milk to achieve desired consistency. Tint with food coloring. Decorate cookies as desired.

thanks mel! I am always looking for cookies recipes. My dd loves those store cookies too and I cannot fork over $3.99 for a box. I too am worried about all the plastic that stuff is coming in. It can be recycled... but still

I have to say though... 9 CUPS of powdered sugar in the frosting!!! LOL ;-)
