Does anyone buy things close to or past their "buy date"? - Page 2

DH bought Horizon organic 2% milk 1 gallon for $2.99 yesterday. Expiry date is Mar 29th, so I'm sure it's gonna get used up.

I buy meat only if I am going to cook it the same day - I do not freeze much.

we have a store here called thrifties. it is very very high quality, and usually expensive, but you deifnitely get what you pay for. on saturday mornings their products go on markdown, and i go and get all of my meat for 75-80% off regular price. their meat is so high quality that i have never been concerned for safety. also all of their deli stuff gets marked down as well, and if i am haviung friends over i'll get the seven layer dips and spinach dips that have to be used within 2 days, for 4 bucks off (works out to like 3.00 for a huge container). last week i got a 4 pack of huge sausages for 80 cents because the pack was 20% off and then 3$ off. you can't beat that, especially if you're freezing,

I get my bread at the bakery outlet and it is always right at the expiration date. I freeze a lot of it. Never had a problem. Generally I look for things in the regular store with a long expiration date if I am paying regular price. I'll be watching for this show tonight! Thanks for the heads up

me too!
as long as you can freeze it, i'll buy it close to the exp. date.
for sure!

That's how I buy most of my meats. If I can use it that day or freeze it, I'll buy it.
One grocery store in my area discounts produce - especially bagged salads. If it doesn't look bad and I know I'll use it that day, I'll get produce that way, too.

Eewwwww Green meat is definately a no-no. It can and probably will make you very sick. I will buy meat on markdown though I just check it to see if it is ok and I normally repackage it before I freeze it so I can smell it. After you freeze it you can be fooled about it being good or not. Bread is ok too but I also don't like it after it has been frozen so I buy it weekly.

if the meat looks green no way that means its bad it means air has gotten into the package(that what the guy at walmart told me when i told him the meat looked green i don't usually buy meat there).. otherwise yes i buy it take it home re-wrap it in freezer paper and pop it in the freezer we have never had a problem i will do it with cheese and rolls or french bread that will be baked or toasted in our oven we don't like regular bread froze.

We have a little store near us that has discounted packaged foods - dented cans, ripped boxes, and some things past the sell-by date. I can get sauce mixes for $.25 that cost a couple dollars at Giant Eagle that might have expired last month. I have never had a problem with any thing that was past its date. I figure if I have to throw out a couple things, I've still saved more money than paying full price. I can also get the kids' favorite name brand cereal for $1.75 - $2.00 just because the box is not in perfect shape.
They don't carry meat or dairy products, but they do have some freezer things. I just try to use my best judgement.
