9 year old transgender student??!! OMG!!

This is just ridiculous. A 9 year old boy has decided that he's now a girl and the school scheduled a meeting with the entire 3rd grade to explain this to them. They notified the parents of the meeting the DAY BEFORE it was scheduled -- nothing like waiting till the last minute! (see link below to article) Is this crazy??!!

There's a reason why there a more and more home schooled students these days!

I agree that they should have put those letters out sooner - give the parents a week's notice or so. Other than that, I think it's great that the school is addressing this in a proactive manner and meeting the needs of the child and parents who are going through this change. Why would anyone choose to homeschool their child over this? It's not like trans-genderism is "catchy." It's not evil. Every interview I've read w/ transgendered people indicate they knew they were in the wrong body from early childhood. It's a medical problem. All they are telling the kids is to please treat the child kindly and not tease him/her and, from the report, it seems that the children in the classroom are doing quite well with it. It's the parents who should be old enough to know better who are all up in arms.

I agree with calimari!

I would also like to add that it is good that in this day and age kids can be so open about things like this. A lot of time people have to hide their sexuality and married the oposite sex and have kids to appear normal to society.

Here are a couple of websites that describe the physiological causes of trans-genderism:

We had a transgender child in our elementary. He was a very nice normal boy.

I'm torn on this. Nine is soooooo young. As a parent you really need to make sure it's the right decision. However having seen my own brother deal with this i think earlier would have made his life sooooooooo much easier.

Changing school districts might be a good choice. However if his school mates are accepting then maybe the child should stay.

I feel for the entire family. What a thing to have to deal with.

I agree. Nine is too young to make this sort of decision. I had someone close to me who tried to change genders right out of high school. He later decided that it wasn't what he wanted, after having started to transition. I would be wary of exposing my child to this sort of attention. Even when I was a child I had wanted to be a boy (so that I could climb trees and fight and whatnot, not because of any thoughts on my gender). I got a bowl cut, wore some gender neutral clothes, and asked my classmates to call me Chris. Oh was that bad! I snapped out of that in a day but it took a year for the kids to forget about it. I'm sure the school is addressing this in the best way they can but no matter how well they word it, teasing is going to happen. I feel for this child.
