Oh, I HATE those things! I lived in Titusville, FL for a little while back in the mid-80's and those things periodically wandered inside. I'll never forget my first horrifying experience with a palmetto bug. One time I was watching TV and, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a flower arrangement moving. Suddenly this gynormous bug crawled on top then decided to take flight!! I don't think my feet touched the floor as I was running out of the room!! I sent my father to go in and kill that sucker. It took him forever to pound that thing to death. Then one time a palmetto bug somehow crawled onto a burner while my mom was cooking dinner. GROSS!!!

Palmetto bugs, spiders as big as your hand, alligators, snakes -- there's no way I'd ever willingly live in Florida!

Well, I have to stick up for Florida - mainly because I grew up having to hear northerners talk about how awful it was and it was so annoying!

I love Florida - bugs and all! It is warm all year round pretty much, I can go to the beach anytime I want, I can just sit at the beach, run on the beach, etc. There are a zillion things to do outside, there are wonderful state parks, national parks, great people from everywhere, water sports galore and so much more!!!

The bugs are not that bad really. I had more bugs in Georgia than I ever have in Florida.

Its soo annoying!! I think no matter where you live there will be some bugs that are just too much!!!

Sorry, I do love Florida, bugs and all - but my experience has been limited to 2 weeks at a time!! Try living up here up North in mid-February and you can't go out because the howling wind and snow and sleet will freeze you to death (sometimes literally!!). And we get critters in our houses too that are trying to stay warm (mice, anyone?)!!!

I was introduced to those bugs once in a hotel room in Orlando - I had never seen one before and FREAKED OUT when it ran across the bathroom floor while I was barefoot!! UGH!!

Good luck!!

Ok, I've never heard of this "palmetto bug" so I googled it. It's just a cockroach!!!! Are they not everywhere in this country?? We have them in Texas, and sometimes they are even BIGGER, those are the 'tree roaches', if you can imagine.....of course, everything IS bigger here, and this just proves it. So are the mosquitos....living on a bayou, you've never seen so many at one time. It's ridiculous. it's us versus them, and they tend to win. You better be carrying some bug spray if you're thinking of going outside at dusk.

Hey...I think those northerners all moved down to my part of Florida...and they're still complaining about how awful it is!

Yes, Florida has HUGE bugs, but they don't really bother me as much as the scorpions that were on my walls and occasionally on our beds when we lived in the southwest, though...I remember climbing into bed and hoping nothing crawled on me or stung me...aahhh!!

My personal experience between the palmetto bug (not sure why it's given this nice name) and a cockroach is that a palmetto bug is much bigger than your garden variety roach. I also seem to remember that it was light brown vs. the reddish brown of a roach. We get roaches and tree roaches here, but we don't get anything as big as a palmetto bug!

OK, I'm getting grossed out now.
