What if gas cost $10.00 a gallon - Page 3

My husband and I have started raising our own chickens, pigs and we even bought a calf this past weekend. Right now gas is pushing almost $4 a gal. I work in the trucking business, I am affraid if things get real bad I may be out of a job : (

dh would be riding a motorcycle to work weather permitting or renting his sisters extra bedroom for during the week and coming home on weekends. thats what would have to happen in order for us to survive growing our own food ect..

We would have to get rid of our truck and get a small car. Dh will most likely be out of work since he is a truck driver. We will walk to a lot of places.

I honestly do not know what would happen with us as the closest grocery store is 6 miles away and I have four children. There is no way I could walk to the store. I guess we would definitely be making only 1 trip per week anywhere and make it last. I am really getting worried about these rising costs....

I do wonder if we won't see more of than. One spouse coming home only on the weekends or something like that.

Well it would certainly put us living in the rural areas out to pasture. If you can't afford the gas, there is no public transportation to utilize, and nothing is closer to you then say 7-10 miles you're pretty much screwed. Guess eventually rural life & farming will become a thing of the past

I have cousins in Europe, and many already do this, its a way of life and has been for years.

Or we will see the rural areas going back to mainly farming, autonomous folk. It seems that would be necessary for survival if you can't sell. This is where DH and I find ourselves.

For those out there who say the rising gas prices aren't affecting them just because they or their spouse drives a company car, think again. The high fuel prices have trickled into every nook and cranny of our lives. You may not be paying at the pump, but you are certainly paying at the grocery store, for example, because food prices are rising as well. It costs more to transport food and goods now and those costs are coming out of our pockets. It's scary when you really think about how every aspect of our society is being affected. I was blessed to be able to quit working a year ago to have our first child, so at least we are saving something on gas since I don't drive to a job. We live too far out of the city to ride bikes there but would definitely invest in good bicycles if we were closer to places.

Just my two-cents worth ..

I do expect gas to hit $10/gallon, I think it will be about $5 by the time fall rolls around. My DH and I have talked about this and are trying to find some ways to save. He only works about 5 miles from home - not a long bike ride but the only route (outside of the expressway) is through a very rough area that I would rather pay for gas than have him drive through. We have discussed me dropping him at the train station and then taking our children to school before I go to work. He would like to sell his car to save money on insurance and parking. It's paid for so I would like to keep it. Taking the train home won't always work because he is a manager and sometimes works late hours (train here stops running at 8 unless there are events downtown).

I am starting to ride my bike to work, it's only about 2.5 miles and I only work 2 days per week. I could let my DD's take the bus to school but I don't like the timing. Bus comes at 6:30, school doesn't start until 7:25. School is only 3 miles from our home so I think it's crazy to spend almost an hour on the bus.

I'm glad we've already started watching our budget and tracking our spending, I think it gives us a jump start on the inevitable.
