Warning about propane tanks

FW: Public Service Announcement regarding Propane Tanks

This came from Government channels and is from the National Propane Gas Association--legitimate.

Meth cooks are getting the propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-Mart, Kroger, etc. and emptying them of the propane. Then, they are filling them with anhydrous ammonia (which they now have a recipe for by the way). After they are finished with them, they return them to the store.

They are then refilled with propane and sent back for you and me to buy.

Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and weakens the structure of the tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with propane and hooked up to our grills, etc. You should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue around the valve areas (see pics on referenced website). If it is present, refuse to purchase that one."

Check out the following website for more details. They also have pictures you can show.

We just had a post about this not too long ago. Here is the Snopes.com story about it: snopes.com: Methamphetamine and Propane Tanks .

I still find it hard to believe a meth maker is going to take back the tank and get a different one. I don't know why they wouldn't just re-use the tank they have. THANKFULLY we re-fill our own tank and don't have to worry about such a thing.

We also fill our own, the scary part is that this has been going on for a few years now and it's just getting out into the news!

I figured even if it wasn't true or these things don't happen anyway, it was still something to have in the back of your mind.
