Take a New Postion for Less Freedom, but More Money?

Thread Starter
well, a coworker quit on friday, and as tomorrow nears,i have a feeling that myself and another coworker will be asked to apply for the newly open position. currently i make 24,000 a year doing writing, shiping, receiving and mail outs. i am basically only accountable to myslef, have a super easy job, and i leave my work at work, leaving my evenings free to pursure my own creative writing ventures.

the new postion pays 27,000 a years (170/ month after taxes more than i clear now). there is a ton of responcibility, accountability, traveling, deadlines etc. and a boss that i currently am under now, but who's input on my job is saying hello once a day.

i'm just wondering... would you comprimise happiness and freedom just to make a little bit more money? sure i could use the extra, but i am not struggling so much that i would be willing to take a job i would potentially hate, to leave behind an easy job that i like.

my main focus is writing, which i do as a small part of my current job. they are talking about getting their own small writing department in the next couple of years, and that is the direction i am hoping to go.

what would you guys do if you were offered a more "prestigiuos job for more money that you would likely not enjoy nearly as much?

No I would not, unless it's a stepping stone to something else that pays much more.

I wouldn't - not for a small pay increase like that. I would rather be happier and make less money...that's why I work part time now.

it would have to be far more money than that for me to take on that kind of responisblity and traveling.

No, that's not enough of a pay raise

Perhaps for more money. but that seems like a small increase for the added stress. Sometimes personal fulfillment outweighs increased pay, IMO.

You'd be making a whole lot less if you decide that it is way too much for you to handle and you need to get out. I LOVED my easy job that paid practically nothing. I wasn't stressed out and I could be a good wife, friend, and daughter. I thought more money would mean more fun, but all I really got was more money and anxiety.

Not for that little bit more.

take it from someone that had the added responsibility thrown in their lap and the travel as well. You do not want to take it for such a small amount of pay. I would much rather be at home and be able to spend time with my family than to travel and be in a hotel room at night alone or with some client eating dinner then have all the travel time alone. you spend a lot of time alone when you travel. I do not like that part of my job at all. I "inhereited" it when my boss retired and my company decided that I was able to fill his shoes as a traveling sales person. Originally I thought it would be nice to travel and see things and meet people (as I am a people person) but the glam wears off really quickly. I really miss the "good ole days". Stay where you are until you can move into the writing position you really are wanting to be in. - You will be much happier.

if you are happy in the job you have now..then keep it.
