Homemade Halloween Costume Ideas

I love homemade Halloween costumes better than store bought. Homemade costumes are so much more creative.

My two favorite costumes for my dd have been Stawberry Shortcake and the M&M. The SS one was simple -- a white shirt with small pink and white stripes, blue jeans, pink hat with bow and a plastic strawberry glued on, red shirt tied around the waist, eyebrow pencil dotted around her nose for freckles, and voila! Strawberry Shortcake. The M&M one was easy too. We dressed her in a black sweat pants and shirt, cut a stiff piece of cardboard into two large circles, put white M&M letters on the front, and attached it to her with velcro.

I turned my son into a pirate last year!

We found a black shirt at goodwill - I think it was a Musketeers type costume shirt. I then found some black pants there too. I cut them off shortly below the knee. I bought some red fabric and cut out a square that I folded in half and put on his head. I also cut a long strip to make into a belt. I had found a play hook at a garage sale so he used that. I got him an eye patch to wear. Oh, and he wore red soccer socks folded over so they were red & white striped. SO cute!

We went trick or treating at the zoo that year and there were MANY pirates but he was the only homemade pirate I saw. We got MANY compliments on him and one man working there dressed like a pirate asked if he could get his picture with him!

The only costumes I made as a kid were the bag of M&Ms. This was a very last minute costume. I got a big black trash bag, cut a hole in the top for my head, 2 holes for arms and made big M & M symbols to put on the front.

I also was a rodeo clown once. Cut off shorts, rainbow suspenders. Red shirt and I tied all different colored bandanas to my belt loops. I wore some crazy striped socks and then cowboy boots and a hat. I think this costume was made completely from items we already had at home! (this was my favorite costume)

My son had a few homemade costumes. One year he was a mouse, one year a tiger and one year he was Peter Pan. That year dd1 was Tinkerbell. I can't take credit for these,my MIL or a friend made them for us. I can't sew at all!

Bob's Harry Potter costume last year was so cool! I made the black robes and the broom myself and my friend knitted the Gryffindor scarf. Jamie was a devil using a costume my mil made--it has been through 4 grandchildren!

This year Bob is going to be Thomas the Tank, a costume made by mil. I am going to make a costume for Jamie so he can be Sir Topmhat.

My mother always made our costumes and she was very talented. She was a roll of toilet paper and my father Mr. Whipple one year.

Cute idea! It would be great if you could enter them in a Halloween costume contest.

I love homemade costumes too but unfortunately my oldest always wants the tacky polyester ones. I made him a Thomas costume the year he was 3 and he was so into Thomas. It was so cute and it took me forever - major labor of love. He walked into preschool on Halloween morning (we had just put it on him when we got out of the car), stopped at the cubbies by the door, stepped right out of it and announced "I'm all done with this costume" and he wouldn't put it back on. Not even for trick or treating! So now when he tells me he wants to be a ninja or Luke Skywalker, I remember that year and take him to Party City.

My little one just turned 3 and he keeps telling me he wants to be a ghost this year. Now that is one costume I won't mind making!

We have always done homemade costumes...they're so much more fun IMO! My favorite one for a little kid one is a M&M - I used a colored turtleneck onesie, stuffed with pillow fluff, white felt "m" taped on front and white tights.

Other than that...they've been all kinds of things - farmer, cowboy, chef, soldier, railroad engineer, dracula, wizard, washing machine, fried egg, playing card, lego etc You don't need to know how to sew necessarily...I've only sewn a few of their costumes, otherwise, it's just about finding the parts and making it. Family Fun always has GREAT ideas in the magazine and on their website. They love getting compliments on their costumes and they've won prizes too!

Last year with the Hannah Montana thing going on, we made my oldest dd a punk rocker. We had some bright, tye die clothes that she wore, and I made her a guitar out of some paper materials. For her hair, she had some fake hair she got from a birthday party that we used to give her hair color and length. It was funny how many people thought she was Hannah Montana.

A few years back, a friend of my mom's gave me some costumes she made her girls when they were small. She used orange felt material and attatched suspenders to them to make them look like flower pots. Then she made a hat with huge petals to go around their faces. It was TOO cute!

When I was a kid I made myself a bag of Jellybeans. LOL I got a huge clear garbage bag, cut holes for my arms and legs, and filled it up with colored ballons. I tied it up at the neck and made a lable for BRACH'S and put it on the front. On the back I made a sign and put "Jellybeans .25" LOL Another year I used that same idea and made myself a Jackolantern. I got one of those huge leaf bags that are orange and have the jackolantern face on them. I filled it up with newspapers to make it puffy and cut holes for my arms and legs. I tied it up at my neck with a green ribbon. I also put a giant green bow in my hair. LOL

One year I made about a dozen homemade costumes to demonstrate on a morning show. Ask Julieinmn... her kids were models for me and it was so fun! I did a spider, a scarecrow, a grape, a dalmatian, a ladybug, a bunch of grapes, a bride, a flower, etc. Here is Julie's son as a bunch of grapes:
