Gift cards: Love 'em or hate 'em? - Page 3

Like 'em! I have 2 nieces that we don't see too often, so we don't know thier tastes/likes/needs. So for Christmas, we tell his family "No gifts except for the kids". Then I get them gift cards when I'm @ Wal-mart getting my kids' gifts. Easy, done, appreciated. They'll use that card a lot easier than the shirt I like & get them but they think is hideous.

Last December, I was in a really bad funk, feeling sorry for myself (by b-day is 10 days before Christmas) that noone was acknowledging my birthday coming up...no money to spend on Christmas...my best friend gave me a $20 Walmart card. I saved it until March when my fave singer released his new CD. That was her & my gift to myself.

PLUS....Wal-mart cards can be refilled. There are a few Wal-marts around me that have a gas station attached. If you use a gift card, the gas is 3 cents cheaper...and 3 cents is 3 cents! lol

I am not a fan. It's just like giving someone money, only with strings attached. It's so strange to me at Christmas when so many people give each other gift cards. Why even bother? Other than enriching some random store, what have you accomplished?

They do have their uses in some cases, though. For example, I do give them to my daughter's teachers for gifts, because that's the purpose: to give them money in a more discreet way. Similarly, I have used them for nieces I know are struggling and could really use it or as a way to thank someone I don't know for volunteering time and energy in some way. But I like to give something else with it that is more personal at the same time.

Me don't really like getting them, I use them but I think they say I haven't thought about you enough to find a real gift.

If I give a gift card you gotta do it right. Like starbucks cards tucked into coffee mugs and wrapped up.

I would rather give cash because it gets used.

I like them. I think the presentation is where you can put your love and thoughtful touch into it.

I love to receive gift cards but prefer to buy presents for others.

Love to give and love to receive, with the caveat that they should fit the giver or receiver.
