The Frugal Mom's Favorite Things by Kimberly Danger

Recently my girlfriends and I were discussing Oprah’s latest Favorite Things show.  You know the one, the shameless screamfest where suburban housewives from across the country are handed thousands of dollars worth of trinkets that Ms. Winfrey finds appealing?   We wondered: Besides Oprah and her cronies, who has the money to buy such things?  Yes, the $500 cashmere Ralph Lauren sweater is GORGEOUS, but I can update my entire wardrobe at Old Navy for that.  And even if I could afford one, the $700 required to buy the Burberry purse would blow my grocery budget for the month.

Most of her viewers, moms like myself, view longingly at the screen, like a sick housebound child watching her friends playing outside without her.  Why, Oprah, do you tease us so?  Unless I win the lottery, or a ticket to next years’ show, these things are sadly out of reach.

For those of you feeling left out, I conducted my own informal survey of moms to come up with my OWN list:  The “Frugal Mom’s Favorite Things”.   To make the list, these things had to be things that multiple moms raved about.  Things that for one reason or another make the frugal mom’s life a little easier, or simply more pleasant.   Enjoy!

Bath & Body Works Wallflowers

Who doesn’t love Bath & Body Works?  This year they introduced cute little air fresheners called Wallflowers.  Wallflowers plug into an outlet and emit great scents for a month or longer.  Plus, they frequently go on sale.  I got mine for a mere $6.  I love the Creamy Nutmeg fragrance.

Dove Facial Cleansing Cloths

I have been a soap-and-water girl all my life, so this frugal mom thought that $6 per box for facial cloths seemed like a splurge.  However after using them for a week, I noticed that my pores seemed to have magically shrunk and my skin became softer.  I borrowed a tip from a Mommysavers reader and cut mine in half, making them last twice as long.

Merona Tote Bag

A cool tote bag is a must for any fashion-conscious mom who has a million things to schlep along with her.  At under $25, this Merona tote from Target fits the bill.  My purse goes in one side, my diaper gear in the hidden middle pocket, and there’s enough room for my datebook and my digital camera on the other side.  It may not bear the Coach or Dooney & Bourke signature print, but I’ve received an amazing number of compliments on this bag.  One of my friends even bought one for herself.  Isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

46offerNetflix Subscription

No late fees, a seemingly unlimited selected of kids’ movies, getting them delivered directly to your mailbox?  This service is the answer to a movie-mom’s prayers.   If you choose to have two movies out at a time (one for you and hubby, one for the kids), you’ll only fork out $14.99 per month.   No dragging whining kids through the video store: priceless.

Aveda Flax Seed & Aloe Styling Gel

I’m sure I’ll have the naysayers complaining that at $10 a bottle, this stuff is no bargain.  I beg to differ.  This wonder syrum is so concentrated that a dime-sized dollop does my short hair just fine.  I love Aveda products, but when tightening my belt I’ll do without the Rosemary Mint shampoo and conditioner.  But let me keep the gel.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

When they say “magic” – they’re not just whistling Dixie.  These little bad boys have removed marker from wood – no small feat.  If you have kids they’re a must.  If you haven’t tried one already, visit their website to print out a coupon for a free sample.

Old Navy Denim

Whether we’re talking about their denim jackets or their jeans, this is denim that moms love.  Now available in plus sizes, short and long sizes, and under $30 per pair, these jeans fit both your body and your budget.  My personal favorites are the just-below-the-waist boot cut jeans.

Amy Knapp’s Family Organizer

Designed by a mom for moms, this little organizer has everything you need rolled into one.  I especially like the tear-out weekly grocery lists.  Pick one up at Wal-mart for under $10.

Budget Living Magazine

I get a lot of magazines, but when this one comes I get truly excited.  It’s packed full of creative ideas for frugal living.  It supports my belief that you don’t have to sacrifice your standard of living when on a budget, and it can actually be FUN.  Best of all, you can get a full year for under $5 at

Best Deal Magazines.

Coffeemate Flavored Creamers

When I need to kick start my day, I love a little Coffeemate in my coffee.  Or should I say, a little coffee in my Coffeemate?  This stuff is so yummy I could drink it by itself.  My new favorite flavor:  Vanilla Caramel.  Simply delicious.

Note: Kimberly Danger isn’t paid to endorse any of these products.  Nor is she wealthy enough to give them out to everyone in her audience. :)
