If you’re like me, you’re eagerly awaiting the Target Christmas markdowns. Target holiday markdowns usually follow a 3-3-2 schedule. Clearance merchandise goes to 50% off the day after the holiday, then 3 days later 70%. One exception: Bagged candy starts at 30% then goes to 50% and 70%. Again, 3 days after that what’s left is 90% off. 2 days after that it goes to salvage (Goodwill). More on that here: Target Clearance Today, Goodwill Tomorrow.
Christmas markdowns are a little bit different. They’re done mainly on manager discretion, and the process takes a little bit longer than other holiday markdowns (depending on how much inventory is left at your store). However, they’re still fairly predictable within a day or two.
Target Christmas Clearance 2012:
- December 26th = 50% off (bagged candy 30% off)
- January 1st = 70% off (bagged candy 50% off)
- January 4th = 90% off (bagged candy 70% off)
However, don’t wait! There are already some fun clearance finds in the home decor section. Plus, lights, Christmas trees and cards are already 30% off.

These photos were taken at the Target store in Mankato, MN on 12/20. YMMV.

I am trying to figure out what day 70 percent off would be? But three days after the day after the holiday is not January 1st. Am I missing something?
Sara, the Christmas markdowns are a bit different (as stated above) and take a bit longer. Usually, the 70% off is on January 1st.
Thanks for posting this! I never knew that the stores typically followed a 3-3-2 schedule. I just always wish and hope I see a 90% sale when I’m there! LOL

My Target (Bowie, MD) had selected items already marked down to 70% yesterday evening when I just happened to stop by…it wasn’t posted, but came up in the system as such…I wasn’t really that surprised because things were pretty much picked over so I’m sure they just want to be rid of all the xmas stuff.
