The Frugal Family Traveler:  Tips for Vacationing on a Budget by Scott W. Danger, CPA

Summer is here, and for many of you that means it is time to plan the annual vacation. Traveling is one of our family's favorite things to do. What we do on vacation has certainly changed for my wife and I since our daughter was born. One thing that hasn’t changed is the excitement of traveling to new places and seeing new things; especially through the eyes of our kids.  I’d like to share with you some tips we have picked up during our travels. Hopefully they will help you enjoy your vacation a little bit more.

Your Budget: Set a budget and stick to it. Before you even think about where you want to go on your vacation, figure out what you can afford. Vacations are a luxury. You should never go into debt to take a vacation. For years, we have put all our loose change in a jar. This is our vacation fund. It’s a painless way to save and after a year, I’m always amazed at how much change we have accumulated.

Airline tickets: Airline tickets get more expensive the closer you get to your vacation. Purchase them as early as possible. I buy our tickets online. This is also a great way to comparison shop.  Sites like TravelocityHotwire.com and Priceline are great sources to comparison shop, and even name your price.

By being flexible, you can save a lot of money. For example, if you are traveling to Orlando, Florida, check the prices to other cites within a few hours of your destination. On a recent trip to Florida, we flew to Atlanta and drove six hours to our destination. This saved us over $800. Also, we never buy a seat for our daughter, who is still under two. Before we book our flight, we make sure there are plenty of empty seats. Then we select an aisle and a window seat leaving the seat between us open. When it is time to board, we bring her car seat and she sits comfortably in her own seat (at no cost!).

Hotels:  I usually book my hotels by checking the rates on the Internet and then calling the 1-800 number and checking their quoted rates. It can sometimes be helpful to call the hotel directly as well, as the 1-800 number is often times a clearing house hired just to take reservations. When you call, always ask if they have any specials. Most chains do, and they usually won’t volunteer these discounts unless you ask.   Keep in mind that the closer the hotel is to the attraction, the more expensive the hotel. Sometimes you want to be right in the middle of the action. If you are willing to walk or drive a little, you can save a lot. I recently booked a hotel in Florida. We will pay 1/3 the price of a hotel on the beach by staying two blocks away from the ocean.  When you check in, always ask for a free upgrade.  You'll be surprised at how many times you'll get a better room than you bargained for.

Meals:  Restaurants almost always charge more for their dinner menu while the same food at lunchtime is less expensive. Use this to your advantage and eat your main meal of the day at noon.  Picnics are also a great way to save a few dollars. Hit the local grocery store or deli and head to the park.  We also look for motels that offer a "free" continental breakfast.

Car rentals:  I always book my car rentals online. Hotels and airline tickets are usually competitively priced with not a lot of difference in cost. For some reason, car rentals for the exact same car at the same airport can differ greatly. There are at least a half-dozen major rental agencies and I check them all. I usually try and book early and then check the Internet often up until the time we leave. I’ve found the best discounts the week before we travel as the agencies try and rent their excess inventory. If I find a better deal, I’ll cancel my original reservation and book at the cheaper rate. Also check the Internet for coupons for free upgrades, etc. Last winter I rented a compact car for a week with a coupon for a free upgrade. The rental agency was out of all upgrades so they ended up giving me an SUV for the same price. It was the best deal I ever had.

Travel times: Off-peak is always the best. The lines are shorter at the attractions and the prices for hotels, meals, etc. are usually much less. The only concession you may have to make is the weather. It may be a little cooler or warmer than the "prime" times but the saving could make the difference from seeing your dream destination in person or just dreaming about it.  Shoulder season travel (typically May and September) offer the best bargains out there without compromising the great weather.

I hope these tips help you in planning your next getaway. Remember, the most important part of a vacation is to spend quality time with your family. Even if your budget only has room for pitching a tent at a nearby state park, enjoy it. Sometimes the most fun and the best adventure is just outside your door.
